Birmingham City vs Sheffield United Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture is an important one at both ends of the Championship table.  Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Birmingham remain in relegation trouble after going down 2-0 to Wolves last weekend to suffer their second successive defeat.  The Blues can have few complaints about the result and a tough task was made impossible when Harlee Dean was sent-off in the 52nd minute.

Sheffield United were held to a 1-1 home draw by Millwall in their last fixture in a match they dominated.  Leon Clarke out them ahead in the 74th minute but the lead last just two minutes and that was the end of the scoring.

The reverse fixture came towards the end of November and it ended in a 1-1 draw with Jeremie Boga netting for City and Leon Clarke for United.  It means the Yorkshire outfit have now won just one of the last six head-to-heads.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Sheffield United are favourites for this game which given the league positions of the two it makes sense.  The Blades though are poor travellers with just two road victories in their last 12 so I could not advise backing them here.  Birmingham have shown improved home form though they have lost each of their last five when entertaining top ten sides so I would advise looking elsewhere for value.
Both sides need all three points and with five of the eight most recent United matches going over 2.5 goals then this looks the way to play it while the second-half to be the highest scoring makes the most sense given the stakes in play.

Birmingham City Preview

The Blues have taken just one point from their last three and they are in 21st place with Barnsley in 22nd two points behind them with a fixture in hand.  City have a tough run in with this game, a trip to QPR and then a home tie with Fulham to end the season.

At St Andrew’s, they have won two and drawn one of their last three though they lost seven of the nine prior to that.  The 16 goals they have scored at their own ground this season is the lowest in the division.

Just two of the last six Birmingham played in the league and four of their last 13 have seen both teams find the back of the net.  Lukas Jutkiewicz has found the back of the net in three of his last four appearances.

Birmingham City Team News

Carl Jenkinson (knock) and Sam Gallagher (calf) are doubts while Isaac Vassell (cruciate) is a long-term absentee.  Harlee Dean will miss the game through suspension though Che Adams returns from his.

Sheffield United Preview

The Blades have lost just one of their last eight to keep alive their play-off hopes as they sit in ninth place three behind Millwall in sixth going into this round of fixtures.  They end the season with Birmingham away, Preston at home and Bristol City away.

Away from Bramall Lane, they have won just one of their last seven with four of these ending in a draw.  11 of the last 17 they have played on the road in the Championship have gone over 2.5 goals.

Each of the last five Sheffield United have played have seen both teams find the back of the net with three ending in a 1-1 draw.  Leon Clarke is back in goalscoring form and has netted in three in his last four.

Sheffield United Team News

Paul Coutts (broken leg) is out for the season while John Lundstrom (unknown) is a doubt.
