Birmingham City vs Nottingham Forest Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture is a Midlands derby between two sides in differing form. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Birmingham lost their second straight going down 2-0 at Oakwell to Barnsley in their last fixture before the international break. The result was a fair reflection of a game that the Tykes dominated and in which the Blues struggled to create. Nottingham Forest won their third of their last four as they eased past QPR at the City Ground coming out on top 4-0. The hero was Tyler (son of Forest legend Des) Walker who grabbed a brace while Kieran Dowell and Barry McKay netted one each. The meetings between this pair last season saw Forest take four points as they won 3-1 at the City Ground while the match at St Andrew’s ended goalless. Just one of their last four head-to-heads has gone over 2.5 goals and just two over 1.5.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Forest are the form team but the prices do not offer any value given that the two squads are not radically different in terms of abilities and while both sides might be in opposite halves of the table currently this might level out over the course of the season if the hosts can get the confidence of the visitors. Six of the eight Birmingham have played at their own ground in the league this season have been level at the interval and as such I think this looks worth a little interest. Given that these eight home games have produced a total of four goals also take a little play on the game to be goalless at the break.

Birmingham City Preview

Things have not gone smoothly for Steve Cotterill since taking over from Harry Redknapp as Blues boss at the start of October. He won his first game in charge but since then has taken just one point from the last four and they sat in 22nd place going into this game. At St Andrew’s, they lost their last game against Brentford but before that did defeat Sheffield Wednesday and Cardiff while drawing with Aston Villa. Goals are in low supply with these four matches producing a total of just four. They have struggled for goals this season with a league low of eight and a top scorer in Jacques Maghoma who has just two goals. Their defence has conceded 25 times though six of these came in one game which saw them lose 6-1 to Hull.

Birmingham City Team News

David Stockdale (broken wrist) and Jason Lowe (hamstring) are closing in on returns while Carl Jenkinson (dislocated shoulder) and Maxime Colin (hamstring) are doubts. Isaac Vassell is out for the remainder of the season with a cruciate problem.

Nottingham Forest Preview

It is now three victories in their last four for Forest which means they went into the international break in ninth place. Mark Warburton seems to have brought a good vibe to the place and with just two of their next ten against teams in the top six then they could continue to rise. Away from the City Ground, they have won three and lost five of the eight played with defeats in three of their last four. They need to tighten up their road defence having shipped nine in their last four on their travels. The 25 goals they have scored this season is the joint fifth best in the division and is led by Barry McKay with seven goals. Their defence has conceded the fifth largest amount this season (26 goals) though they have kept clean sheets in two of their last four.

Nottingham Forest Team News

Matty Cash and David Vaughan hope to make their returns from injury.
