Birmingham City vs Newcastle United Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Birmingham City and Newcastle United will square off at the St. Andrew’s Stadium on Saturday afternoon in the FA Cup, with both teams looking to get back to winning ways. Birmingham were thrashed 1-3 at home by Brentford in the Championship on Monday, despite the fact that they had the lead in the 23rd minute following Lukas Jutkiewicz’s goal. Newcastle United have also succumbed to a defeat last time out in the Championship, losing 1-0 on the road at Blackburn Rovers. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Birmingham City Preview

Birmingham City had a decent start to their 2016/2017 competitive season, but they looked awful over the past month. The Blues have only won once in their last seven games in the Championship and come into this clash off the back of a four-game winless streak. They had problems to keep the ball out of their own net during their recent run of form, conceding at least two goals in five of their last seven league fixtures. Despite the recent struggle, Birmingham find themselves in 13th position in the Championship table tied on 35 points with the 12th-placed Aston Villa. The Blues were on a seven-game unbeaten run at home between the end of August to the middle of November, but their recent home form saw them losing three of the last four league fixtures. The most worrying fact is that Birmingham are winless in their last five meetings with Newcastle United in all competitions, including a heavy 4-0 defeat in the middle of December. Their recent record in the FA Cup has seen them winning just two of their last nine games and were eliminated in the third round of the competition in the last two editions. Furthermore, the Blues have lost five of their last six home fixtures in the FA Cup. A player to watch for Birmingham is Lukas Jutkiewicz, as the 27-year-old striker is leading the club’s goalscoring charts with 8 goals in his 20 appearances in the Championship.

Newcastle United Preview

Newcastle United suffered their second defeat in the last three league fixtures on Monday, which dent their title hopes. This leaves the Magpies in second position in the Championship, two points off current leaders Brighton, who have a game in hand. Rafael Benitez have alternated victories with defeats over the past two months, losing five and winning four of their last nine games across all competitions. They haven’t been at their best on the road over the past two months, losing three of their last five away games in all competitions. The good news is that Newcastle are unbeaten in the last seven visits to the St. Andrew’s Stadium, scoring two goals in four of these. Regarding their FA Cup recent history, Newcastle have suffered five defeats in their last eight games in the competition, and are currently on a five-game losing streak. The most worrying fact is that the Magpies are winless in their last 12 away games in the FA Cup, losing eight and drawing three in the process. Dwight Gayle has been excellent throughout this campaign, as the 26-year-old striker is currently leading the Championships goalscoring charts with 19 goals in his 21 appearances. Matt Ritchie has also played a vital part in the Magpies’ performances this season, helping the team with a decent return of 4 goals and 6 assists in his 23 appearances in the Championship.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Although they’ve struggled over the past week, Newcastle still have the better squad for this one. Furthermore, the Magpies are unbeaten in the last five meetings with Birmingham, scoring at least two goals in four of these. This being said, I’m backing Newcastle to win here, but I’m also expecting Birmingham to get on the scoresheet.
