Birmingham City vs Newcastle United Match Prediction

By Charlotte Louise Bushell

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) game will have implications at both ends of the Championship table. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

These two sides have already met three times this season with Newcastle so far going unbeaten in all these games. The first time they met was December 10th in the reverse fixture that saw the Magpies win 4-0 thanks to a Dwight Gayle hat-trick and one from Yoan Gouffran. They met again in early January in the FA Cup third round which ended 1-1 with a goal each from Daryl Murphy and Lukas Jutkiewicz. The North-Eastern side had no trouble in the replay coming out on top 3-1 thanks to a brace from Matt Ritchie and one from Yoan Gouffran with the Blues solitary goal coming from David Cotterill.

The second city outfit got a much-needed point at Cardiff last out drawing the game 1-1. They went behind in the 53rd minute, but Luks Jutkiewicz rescued them with an 89th-minute strike.

Rafa Benitez and his side were shocked by Fulham last time out with the London outfit running out 3-1 victors with a 76th minute Daryl Murphy strike proving to be a mere consolation and not the start of a fightback.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Newcastle should win here as there is a gulf in class but the price needs boosting so look for ways to enhance it. Five of the last seven for both sides have seen over 2.5 goals so take the Magpies to win and the overs.

I’ve been banging the drum for Craig Gardner for a few weeks now, but he has yet to find the breakthrough his shots stats suggest he is due. He played the second most further forward for Birmingham last time and registered two shots on target I think he looks worth another chance in the first player to score market with each-way anytime option.

Birmingham City Preview

Just 11 points from their last 18 games has seen Birmingham slide from playoff hopefuls to looking over their shoulder at the relegation zone. They currently sit in 17th place six points above the relegation zone with six of their remaining nine matches to come against sides in the top 16 of the table.

It is three straight home defeats for the Blues and just one win from their last nine in front of their own fans. They have netted a total of just three goals in their last six at their own ground.

Both teams to score and over 2.5 goals would have paid out in five of the last six for Birmingham. Six of the nine they have played at home to teams in the top half have gone over 2.5 goals. Eight of their last nine have seen a goal in the final 20 minutes of the tie.

Newcastle United Preview

It is just two wins from the last five for Newcastle which by their early own high standards is a little disappointing. They sat joint top of the Championship table going into the week level on points with Brighton and six above Huddersfield in third.

No side have been better on the road in the division than the Magpies who have won 13, drawn three and lost just three on their travels. They have won five of their seven away to teams in the bottom eight.

Both teams to score has been a feature of their recent fixtures with this happening in five of their last seven. Five of their last seven on the road have seen over 2.5 goals. Four of their last five have featured a goal in the first 15 minutes.

Newcastle to win and over 2.5 goals

Clayton Donaldson (heel) is near to a first-team return though Cheick Keita (knee) is a doubt.  Michael Morrison (groin) and Rhoys Wiggins (knee) are long-term absentees.

Rolando Aarons is back in training following a broken toe though DeAndre Yedlin (knee), Jamie Sterry (groin) and Isaac Hayden (ankle) are unlikely to feature.
