Birmingham City vs Middlesbrough Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Tuesday evening (19:45) fixture features two sides in opposite halves of the Championship table. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Birmingham lost their fifth straight league game last time out going down 2-1 at Nottingham Forest on the weekend. The Blues found themselves one behind after just six minutes and then two down on 79 minutes before Michael Morrison netted a late consolation. Middlesbrough were impressive 3-0 victors on Friday night as they saw off Leeds United at the Riverside. Patrick Bamford was the star of the show as he grabbed a hat-trick to help them secure three important points. The reverse fixture came in November in Teeside and Boro won that one 2-0 thanks to a Britt Assombalonga brace. It means that the Midlands side have failed to win any of the last seven head-to-heads.

Betting Tips and Predictions

I do think Middlesbrough will win the game given the way they played on Friday night and given how Birmingham have lost five in a row. I could not put anyone off backing them but the Midlands side could react to the sacking of Steve Cotterill with a positive showing. The Blues could look to keep things tight early on and Boro might have to wait to break them down so I think taking no goal before 32:00 and the second 45 minutes to be the highest scoring half.

NO goal before 32:00

Second-half to be the highest scoring 45 minutes

Birmingham City Preview

The Blues have hit a slump losing each of their last five in the league and netting just once in these matches. This run saw the end of manager Steve Cotterill with Gary Monk (at the time of writing) strong favourite to take over. At St Andrew’s, they have lost their last two and three of their last four failing to net in these defeats. 11 league home goals are the lowest in the Championship and two behind Burton the next lowest ranked. In their last three league fixtures Birmingham have shipped a total of five goals in the first-half. They have shipped 13 goals in their last six in the division with only Sheffield Wednesday (14) conceding more.

Birmingham City Team News

Isaac Vassell (cruciate), David Davis (knee) and Jonathan Grounds (medial collateral ligament) are long-term absentees.

Middlesbrough Preview

It is seven points from their last three fixtures for Middlesbrough who are in decent form as they bid to make the end of season play-offs. They sit in seventh place one place and two points outside with four of their next six against the bottom ten. Away from the Riverside Stadium, they have taken just one point from their last three though they have won four of their last six when visiting bottom ten sides. Only Fulham (30) have scored more goals than the 26 the Teesiders have got on their travels. Patrick Bamford is a player on fire having netted six goals in his last three appearances with a hat-trick, a brace and a single effort. 12 of the last 14 they have scored in the league have come between the 30th and 70th minute.

Middlesbrough Team News

Fabio (thigh) is a doubt while Rudy Gestede (broken ankle) is unlikely to play again this season.
