Birmingham City vs Middlesbrough Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture is an important one in the Championship promotion race as eighth play host to fifth. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Birmingham put in a spirited performance before going down 2-0 away to Premier League side West Ham in the FA Cup Third Round. In the league, they made it back-to-back draws on New Year’s Day with a 1-1 away to Sheffield Wednesday with Che Adams netting.

Middlesbrough had a tricky looking home tie with Peterborough but booked their place in the last 32 with a 5-0 comfortable victory as Britt Assombalonga netted a brace while Lewis Dunk, George Friend and Ashley Fletcher grabbed one each. In the Championship, their last fixture was on January 1st and ended 1-1 at Derby with Jordan Hugill getting the goal.

The reverse fixture came on August 11th at the Riverside with the Teesiders winning 1-0 thanks to a Britt Assombalonga goal. The expected goals data suggests that this result was a fair reflection of the match.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Bookmakers are having trouble splitting the pair with Birmingham slight favourites over Middlesbrough. The draw seems the most likely result given the hosts have a joint league high of 12 draws. The Teesiders meanwhile have drawn three of their last six on the road in the Championship.

A score draw seems the most likely option with Boro having netted in eight of their last nine on the road so get a number of score draws on side by backing the game to end in a draw and both teams to score.

Birmingham City Preview

The Blues are unbeaten in their last five through three of these have ended in draws and they sit eighth in the Championship. This puts them four off Derby in sixth and they now face four straight against top 12 sides with their next three against top seven units.

At St Andrew’s, the Midlands outfit have lost just once this season in the league with seven of these ending in draws. Three of the last four visitors here have failed to find the back of the net.

Birmingham have been quiet in the transfer market so far and given their financial issues off the field are likely to remain so. Their fate will be decided upon at an EFL hearing which is set for February.

Birmingham City Team News

Isaac Vassell (hip) and David Davis (ankle) have returned to training and are closing in on returns while Kristian Pedersen (ankle), Omar Bogle and Marc Roberts (both calf) are rated doubtful.

Middlesbrough Preview

Boro have been a mixed bag of late with two wins, two draws and two defeats from their last six to sit in fifth. They are six points behind Norwich in second and four of their next five are against the top eight.

Away from the Riverside, the Teesiders have lost just two times in the league this season with defeats at Norwich and QPR. They have netted in each of their last five and eight of their last nine on the road.

Rajiv van La Parra has joined Middlesbrough on loan from Huddersfield and it is hoped he will add some creativity to the team. Martin Braithwaite has left on loan through he was behind Hugill, Assombalonga and Gestede in the striker stakes.

Middlesbrough Team News

Aden Flint (hamstring) and Ryan Shotton (knee) are doubts while Sam McQueen (cruciate) is a long-term absentee.
