Birmingham City vs Ipswich Town Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) Championship fixture will have important implications on the relegation battle.  Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Birmingham picked up an important victory (and their first under Gary Monk) in their last fixture defeating Hull 3-0.  A Jota brace was key for the Blues in picking up all three points while Che Adams also netted once.

Ipswich suffered a second successive defeat as they went down 1-0 away to Bristol City in their previous fixture.  The result was probably a little harsh on Town with little to choose between the two sides.

The reverse fixture came on the opening day of the season at Portman Road and a Joe Garner goal gave the Suffolk side all three points.  It put to an end a run of four without victory against City.

Betting Tips and Predictions

At the prices on offer I cannot make a case for siding with anything but the visitors and the draw in the double chance market.  I think Birmingham might just get themselves out of trouble but the odds are too reactionary to one result because over the course of a season Town have clearly shown to be the stronger side.

The hosts seem to have found their scoring boots in recent weeks with two against Cardiff and three against Hull while the visitors have netted in six of their last seven road trips including at Fulham and Preston.  Backing both teams to score then looks a sensible solution to this puzzle.

Birmingham City Preview

The Blues had lost seven straight games ahead of that victory over Hull and must hope that marks a turning point.  Going into the Easter Friday fixture list they were in 22nd place level on points with Barnsley in 21st and they face three winnable games in a row.

At St Andrew’s, they have lost four of their last five and have not drawn any of their previous 12.  Just one of their last eight and two of their last 15 in front of their own fans have seen both teams find the back of the net.

The last two Birmingham league games and four of their last six have gone over 2.5 goals with the last two alone producing eight.  Just 32% of the goals they have scored have come in the first-half with just 19% in the opening 30 minutes.

Birmingham City Team News

Carl Jenkinson (knock), Sam Gallagher (calf) and Craig Gardener (hamstring) are doubts while Isaac Vassell (cruciate) and Jonathan Grounds (medial collateral ligament) are long-term absentees.

Ipswich Town Preview

The Tractor Boys have now lost two straight and have taken one point from their last three as their season seems set to fizzle out.  Going into Friday they were in 12th place and the main issue related to the club now is whether they go ahead with another season of boss Mick McCarthy.

Away from Portman Road, they have lost just one of their last six winning three of these.  They lost nine times on the road this season but they have all come against top 16 sides with no defeat to a side in the bottom eight.

Just one of the last six Ipswich Championship fixtures and two of their last ten have seen both teams find the back of the net.  Just two of their last 12 have gone over 2.5 goals with four of their last six going under 1.5.

Ipswich Town Team News

Joe Garner (knee), Dominic Iorfa (thigh) and Mustapha Carayol (groin) are rated doubtful. Tom Adeyemi, Teddy Bishop (both hamstring) and Dean Gerken (hip) are long-term absentees.  David McGoldrick (groin), Emyr Huws and Andre Dozzell (both knee) are unlikely to feature again this season.
