Birmingham City vs Cardiff City Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Friday evening (19:45) game is live on SKY TV and features the league leaders travelling to take on a side under new management. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. Birmingham will be looking to bounce back from an absolute hammering in their final game under caretaker boss Lee Carsley. They lost 6-1 at Hull before the international break in a game that saw them net a 90th minute Sam Gallagher goal as a meagre consolation. Cardiff were held to a goalless draw in their final game before they headed into the international period as they could find no way past a well-drilled Derby outfit despite seeing more of the ball. The last these two sides met was in Wales last March and ended 1-1 while the game in the Midlands ended 0-0. Four of their last six meetings have finished all-square with none of the last seven featuring more than 2 goals.

Betting Tips and Predictions

The visitors are the favourites to win this game given their strong start to the season and I could not put anyone off this bet. I am going to be cautious though as you don’t know how having a new man in the dugout will impact the Blues. I instead want to look at the goals market as this is the most obvious area where the new Birmingham manager will look to exert his influence. Steve Cotterill was credited with great work with the Blues defence at the end of last season and he will start by making his side difficult to beat. Cardiff are always difficult to beat under Neil Warnock so go under in the goals market looks the play. Under 2.5 seems reasonable enough value while under 1.5 goals also looks worth a play in a game neither side will go all out attacking and might be decided by a set-piece goal or an individual mistake.

Birmingham City Preview

Steve Cotterill is the man who will take over the Blues and he will hope that a sequence of three home fixtures in his next four can help him and his team pick up some points. They sit 22nd and in a relegation spot following a run of six defeats from their last eight. At home, they have a mixed set of results with two victories, one draw and a defeat from their five so far in the Championship. Just one of the last seven goals at St Andrew’s has come in the first 45 minutes of the match. They have struggled in front of goal this season with just seven goals which only two teams (Burton and Bolton) netting a lower amount. Also, they have shipped 19 goals which is the joint fourth worst record in the division but just six of these they have conceded have come in the first-half.

Birmingham City Team News

Carl Jenkinson (dislocated shoulder), Che Adams, Jota and Jason Lowe (all hamstring) will hope to use the break to return to fitness though the game will come too soon for David Stockdale (broken wrist).

Cardiff City Preview

Almost a quarter of the season down (11 games) and it has been an excellent start to the season for the Bluebirds who sit top with 24 points. They have lost just once this season as Neil Warnock seems to have done a remarkable job turning around a side who this time last season were struggling near the bottom. On the road, they have been tough to beat winning three, drawing one and losing just one of their five so far. Their away matches ten to be low scoring with a total of six goals scored and just six conceded. A tight defence is key to their success with just nine conceded this campaign which is only bettered by Preston (six). Their attack also is one of the top eight in the division with goals spread around as five players have netted on more than occasion.

Cardiff City Team News

Frederic Gounongbe (hip) will hope to return but the game will come too soon for Kadeem Harris (ankle) and Rhys Healey (cruciate).
