Birmingham City vs Brighton & Hove Albion Match Prediction

By Darren Colebrook

The live game on Saturday evening is a battle between two promotion hopefuls as Birmingham take on Brighton on Sky Sports (17.30).

Birmingham won 2-1 at home to Ipswich last time out thanks to goals from Clayton Donaldson (pen) and Michael Morrison though Adam Webster did net a consolation for their opponents Ipswich.

Brighton meanwhile were involved in a five-goal thriller at Ewood Park with them coming out on top 3-2.  They went 2-0 up thanks to goals from Shane Duffy and Dale Stephens before Rovers got back into the game through Sam Gallagher.  It was tight at 2-1 for a while before Blackburn shot themselves in the foot when Gordon Greer was sent off and shortly after Glenn Murray netted the vital third for Brighton. Gallagher got a second for the home side in injury time but it was nothing more than a consolation.

Birmingham Preview

It will be interesting to see the reaction Gianfranco Zola receives in the home dugout as he makes his managerial debut following the controversial sacking of Gary Rowett who in his time at the club had moved them from the relegation mix to the play-off zone.  Zola must hit the ground running and convince the players and fans that he is the man to lead them back to the Premier League.

The Midlands side have lost just twice at home all season with one of these defeats coming last time out when they were beaten 3-0 by Barnsley. They have an impressive six wins, three draws and just two defeats in these 11 home games though they have yet to play any of the top six at home.

Brighton Preview

The 10th September was the last time Brighton lost and Chris Hughton and his side are unbeaten in their last 15 games which has an excellent run of form. It is not like the Seagulls get less impressive on their travels as they have taken 16 points from the 18 available from their last six games on the road.

One thing that could give Birmingham hope is that of the four away games Brighton have played against sides in the top eight they have only won one of them, drawing two of them and losing away to Newcastle.

Under 2.5 goals is a feature of Brighton away games with seven of their ten going under 2,5 goals with the Seasiders keeping clean sheets six times on the road.

Birmingham Team News

Birmingham will be hoping that Diego Fabbrini (groin) can feature though Greg Stewart (thigh) and Paul Caddis (shoulder) are out for a few weeks while Rhoys Wiggins (knee) is out for the season.

Brighton Team News

Birma Kayal is back in training and may feature here while Jamie murphy, Uwe Hunemeier (hand) and Liam Rosenior (ankle) are also close to returning.

Betting Tips and Prediction

Despite the change of manager I can not see past Brighton here to win this game they are quality side and any time you can get better than evens on them to win a game in this division you should take it (unless they are playing Newcastle).

I can see this game having goals as part of the mandate for Gianfranco Zola is to have a side that is entertaining and at better than evens over 2.5 goals looks a nice play here
