Birmingham City vs Brentford Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Wednesday evening fixture (19:45) features two sides in the bottom seven of the Championship. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. Birmingham were in action on Sunday and they battled out a 0-0 home draw with local rivals Aston Villa. The expected goals data shows that the two sides were evenly matched although Villa came closest to scoring having hit the woodwork twice. Brentford continued their recent good form with a useful road win at Preston coming out on top 3-2. Nico Yennaris netted for the second successive game while Romaine Sawyers and Ollie Watkins also grabbed a goal to secure three important points. The away side won both meetings last season with the game at St Andrew’s being won 3-1 by the Bees and the game at Griffin Park 2-1 by the Blues. Six of their last seven meetings have seen a goal netted in the final 15 minutes.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Bookmakers are having trouble splitting the pair with the visitors marginal favourites. Brentford have picked up in recent weeks and a run of seven points from three games on the road is impressive considering their opponents were Preston, Middlesbrough and Bolton. Birmingham though will be buoyed that they held Villa at bay at the weekend and are tough to break so this looks a game not to get involved in the match markets. Under 2.5 goals is the outsider of two here and given that the Blues last three home fixtures have produced a total of two goals I think this looks worth an interest. Brentford are scoring on their travels but they will not have the open space here. Nico Yennaris has two in the last two and is still going off at double-figure odds to be the first goalscorer and this looks each-way value with this paying out if he gets a goal at any point in the match.

Birmingham City Preview

It has been a mixed set of results for the Blues since Steve Cotterill took over as manager with a victory over Cardiff, a draw with Aston Villa and a defeat at Millwall. This marks the start of a four-game run that does not feature an opponent currently in the top ten. At St Andrew’s, they have played seven times with three victories, two draws and two defeats. They have kept clean sheets in each of their last three while netting just two goals and taking seven points. A lack of goals has been an issue for Birmingham this season with their tally of eight the joint second lowest in the division. Just ten of the 29 goals netted in their games has come in the opening half.

Birmingham City Team News

David Stockdale (broken wrist) and Jason Lowe (hamstring) are close to returns while Carl Jenkinson (dislocated shoulder), Isaac Vassell (knee) and Emilio Nsue (unknown) are doubts.

Brentford Preview

It is now seven unbeaten for the Bees in the league and 13 points from a possible 21 available. They are beginning to climb the table though two of their next three are against sides currently in the top six. Away from Griffin Park, they have taken seven points from their last three games on their travels having taken just one from their first three. They have netted nine times in their last four on the road while shipping six times. They have scored exactly 20 goals and conceded exactly 20 which puts them in the top third of attacking teams and the bottom third defensively. 65% of the goals Brentford have scored have come in the second-half and 30% in the final 15 minutes.

Brentford Team News

Lewis MacLeod (knee) is closing in a return while Rico Henry (knee) and Alan Judge (leg) are long-term absentees.
