Benfica’s traditionally strong home record in the Champions League has somewhat wavered in recent seasons, but with Jose Mourinho likely to take a pragmatic approach to the game I can see United coming away with a narrow victory.

Benfica Preview

Benfica progressed past a potential banana skin in Olhanense in the Taca de Portugal at the weekend, seeing off their lower-league opponents with a 1-0 victory away from home. Gabriel Barbosa in particular came into the game with a point to prove and did so, scoring the only goal of the game to book his team’s place in the next round of the competition. Benfica, though, have bigger fish to fry at present and will be disappointed overall with the start they have made to the league campaign, already finding themselves five points behind leaders Porto after eight matches. Also winning just two of their last seven games, as well as suffering defeats in each of their first two Champions League ties, there is huge pressure on the team collecting a victory on Wednesday evening. Losing 5-0 away to Basel in their last European contest not only hurt their pride but severely damaged their chances of qualifying for the last 16, now finding themselves sat rock bottom of Group A without a single point and -6 goal difference. Their home record against English teams in recent times is also nothing to shout about, with Benfica currently without a win in three games at home to Premier League sides.

Manchester United Preview

They say a leopard never changes its spots and Jose Mourinho was the living embodiment of that mantra at Anfield after navigating his side to a 0-0 draw away to Liverpool at the weekend. Despite another mass outlay in the summer, United adopted the same tactics as they did last season when facing Jurgen Klopp’s men last term, who came closest when Joel Matip was denied brilliantly by David de Gea. Romelu Lukaku had United’s best opportunity but was unable to convert as United ultimately came away with what they appeared to have targeted at the start of the contest. The result extended United’s unbeaten run to eleven consecutive matches, last tasting defeat in the UEFA Super Cup in August and they will be looking to make it three wins from three in the Champions League. Mourinho’s side won 4-1 in their last European away game, comfortably seeing off CSKA Moscow in what was their first away win in the group stages since November 2013 under David Moyes. Victory here would all but guarantee United a place in the last 16 of the competition and Mourinho will be eager to confirm that accomplishment sooner rather than later.

Manchester United Team News

Marcos Rojo (cruciate ligament), Paul Pogba (hamstring), Marouane Fellaini and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (both knee) are all missing. Eric Bailly and Michael Carrick both have knocks and will be assessed.
