Benfica vs CSKA Moscow Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

The Primeira Liga champions Benfica welcome last season’s runner-ups of the Russian Premier League CSKA Moscow at the Estadio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica on Tuesday night, September 12, for the opening round of their Champions League group A. Benfica had an excellent start to their 2017/18 competitive season and they will be looking to continue their good run of form. Meanwhile, CSKA Moscow have already played four Champions League fixtures so far this season, beating the likes of AEK Athens and Young Boys in the qualifying phase. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Benfica are huge favourites to win here, but CSKA Moscow hold the better head-to-head record in this tie, winning once and drawing once in their two meetings. I’m expecting goals in this one as both teams have been scoring goals in this early part of the season.

Benfica Preview

Benfica kicked off the new season in style as they beat Guimaraes 3-1 in the Portuguese Super Cup and are currently on a four-game unbeaten run in the Primeira Liga. They need to play against Portimonense at the weekend, but they should be able to pick up all three points as Friday’s visitors have suffered defeats in three of their opening four league games. Benfica have looked incredibly strong in front of goal in this early part of the season, scoring at least three goals in five games. Benfica dominated Portuguese football last season as they did the domestic double and followed this up with the Portuguese Super Cup trophy at the beginning of August. The good news is that Benfica are still looking like a strong side despite the fact that they have lost several key players in the shape of Ederson, Victor Lindelof, Nelson Semedo and Kostas Mitroglou this summer. They managed to bring in loan wonder-kids Douglas and Gabriel Barbosa from Barcelona and Inter, while Haris Seferovic has been impressive since his move from Eintracht Frankfurt this summer. Seferovic has already scored three goals for Benfica in the Primeira Liga and also netted twice for Switzerland in the World Cup qualifiers last week. Benfica looked decent in the Champions league over the past two years, as they reached the quarter-finals in 2015/16 and progressed from the group stage last year, losing 4-1 on aggregate at the hands of BVB in the round of 16.

Benfica Team News

Benfica have no injury doubts.

CSKA Moscow Preview

CSKA Moscow finished as runner-ups in the Russian Premier League table last term, seven points behind the champions Spartak Moscow. They had to play two qualifying ties in order to reach the Champions League group stage, but they registered some comfortable aggregate victories over AEK Athens and Young Boys. Last season, CSKA have qualified automatically for the group phase, but they finished bottom of the group table behind Monaco, Bayer Leverkusen, and Tottenham. Actually, the Russians have come bottom of their group in their last two Champions League appearances. Overall, CSKA Moscow were on a ten-game winless streak in the Champions League prior to their four consecutive wins in qualifying this season. Away from home, CSKA have only won four of their last 17 Champions League games. The good news is that CSKA have looked much better on the road over the past nine months, losing just once in their last 13 away games across all competitions. CSKA are winless in their five trips to Portugal, although their first three visits ended in draws. CSKA Moscow had a mixed start to the current Premier League season, and they also have a difficult trip to Amkar Perm on Friday.

CSKA Moscow Team News

Aleksandr Makarov is a doubt ahead of this trip.
