Benfica vs Borussia Dortmund Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Benfica host Borussia Dortmund at the Estadio Da Luz in the first leg of their last 16 Champions League tie. Benfica won 3-0 in the build-up to this one on Friday night, comfortably seeing off Arouca at home. Dortmund didn’t have such success, losing 2-1 away to Darmstadt in a really poor result for Thomas Tuchel’s side. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Benfica Preview

Benfica stayed top of the Portuguese Primeira Liga last time out after cruising past Arouca with a 3-0 victory on Friday evening. The game was virtually over by half-time, courtesy of Greek forward Kostas Mitroglou. The former Fulham man struck twice before half-time to put Benfica in a comfortable position heading into the break, although goalkeeper Ederson Moraes was later sent off in the half to add a sour note to proceedings. Andre Carrillo then struck five minutes into the second half as Benfica maintained their one-point lead over Porto in the table. The Portuguese title race is now down to two teams in Porto and Benfica, both of whom are also set to feature in last 16 Champions League action over the next month. Rui Vitoria’s side have enjoyed a far from perfect run to reaching this stage of the competition, managing two wins, two draws and two defeats from their six games. Their subsequent tally of eight points was the lowest of any side to progress to the knockout stages, although they made it more nervy from themselves when losing 2-1 at home to Napoli on matchday six of the groups. That defeat, however, was their only loss at home in nineteen matches on their own patch this term, proving how strong they have been there this season.

Dortmund Preview

The underwhelming tone of Borussia Dortmund’s season was further exaggerated at the weekend, as they lost 2-1 away to bottom-of-the-table Darmstadt. Thomas Tuchel’s men were tipped to run Bayern Munich closest for the title this season but have found themselves someway short of the required standard, finding themselves a goal down after twenty-one minutes through Terrence Boyd. Raphael Guerreiro drew Dortmund level shortly before half-time, but they were unable to build on that boost as Antonio Colak scored the winner for the home side with twenty-three minutes remaining. Dortmund currently sit 4th in the Bundesliga table after twenty games - fifteen points off leaders Bayern who look set to cruise their way to yet another league title. Along with the DFB Pokal, this is Dortmund’s best opportunity to end the season with silverware as they look to return to the Champions League final for the first time since 2013. Dortmund came through their Champions League group unbeaten with four wins and two draws - both ties coming against Real Madrid. Away from home, they consequently took seven points from a possible nine including a 2-1 win in Portugal at Sporting, so will fancy their chances of taking back a positive result here.

Benfica Team News

Alejandro Grimaldo Garcia is ruled out for at least another month after suffering an abdominal injury. Lisandro Lopez (leg) and Eduardo Salvio (ankle) are both doubtful for the home side.

Dortmund Team News

Sven Bender (ankle) is missing for Dortmund in this one. Lukasz Piszczek (back), Marcel Schmelzer (knee), Sebastian Rode (ankle) and Mario Gotze (muscle) all have knocks, although Nuri Sahin (knee) is back in training.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Looking at it on paper, these sides look extremely well-matched going into this meeting and it should be an entertaining contest. Dortmund have performed well away from home in Europe this season, so I’m expecting them to pick up a point and come away from this one with a score draw.
