Benfica vs Basel Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Basel will be looking to seal their place in the Champions League round of 16 when they travel to the Estadio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica to take on Benfica for the group A final fixture. Benfica lost 2-0 on the road at CSKA Moscow last time out in the Champions League, with Rui Vitoria’s men conceding a goal in each half. On the contrary, Basel managed an unexpected 1-0 home win over Manchester United thanks to an early goal from Michael Lang. Feel free to visit our Bet of the day page to check our best daily tips.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Basel need all three points here in order to book their place into the next stage of the competition, but Benfica enjoyed a strong run of form domestically over the past few weeks. It’s a tricky game, but I’m going with Basel to win here as Benfica have nothing left to play for.

Benfica Preview

Benfica’s 2-0 defeat in Moscow two weeks ago was their only loss in the last five competitive fixtures. They head into this game on buoyant mood as they are undefeated in seven league games, including a nil-nil away draw at rivals FC Porto at the weekend. This leaves them third in the league table with 30 points to their name after 13 rounds, just three points behind the joint-leaders Sporting Lisbon and FC Porto. Their recent home form has seen them win four of their last five games across all competitions, keeping a clean sheet in each of these. The bad news is that Benfica have only won once in their last four home games in the Champions League, having lost back-to-back fixtures against CSKA Moscow and Manchester United this season. Benfica have lost all of their five group games this season and they will be become the first Portuguese team to lose all group fixtures if they will suffer another defeat against Basel on Tuesday. The Portuguese side are rock bottom of the group A table with no points to their name and have only scored once in five group fixtures so far this season.

Benfica Team News

Julio Cesar and Filipe Augusto Carvalho Souza are both doubts, but Ruben Dias is back in training.

Basel Preview

On the contrary, Basel have enjoyed an impressive run of form over the past three months, losing just once in their last 15 games across all competitions. The Swiss head into this clash on the back of a five-game winning streak, including a 1-0 home victory over Manchester United last time out in the Champions League. This leaves Basel second in the group A table tied on nine points with the third-placed CSKA Moscow, just three points adrift of the current leaders Manchester United. This means that a victory here would be enough for Basel to secure their spot in the next stage of the competition, as they have a better goal difference than CSKA Moscow. Prior to their 0-2 victory at CSKA Moscow, Basel were on a four-game winless streak in the Champions League, having scored none in the process. The only good news is that Basel are currently unbeaten in seven away games across all competitions, conceding just three goals in this term. Dimitri Oberlin has been Basel’s most prolific player in front of goal throughout this Champions League group stage campaign, as he is their top scorer with three goals under his belt.

Basel Team News

Kevin Bua, Ricky van Wolfswinkel, Germano Vailati, Omar Gaber and Serey Die are all doubts ahead of this trip.
