Belgium vs Gibraltar Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Belgium will look to extend their lead at the top of the World Cup qualifying group H when they welcome Gibraltar at the Stade Maurice Dufrasne in Liege on Thursday night. Belgium picked up a comfortable 0-2 win at Estonia last time out thanks to goals from Dries Mertens and Nacer Chadli. Meanwhile, Gibraltar suffered a narrow 1-2 home loss at the hands of Cyprus in their most recent qualifier, with their consolation goal being scored by Anthony Hernandez. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

It should be a one-sided clash as the best goalscoring team in the group, Belgium, will take on the worst defence in this qualifying campaign, Gibraltar. Belgium should be able to score another couple of goals here after they netted six in the reverse fixture in Gibraltar back in October 2016.

Belgium Preview

Belgium enter the fray on the back of a nine-game unbeaten streak across all competitions, winning six and drawing three in the process. Actually, the Belgians have only lost once since their 3-1 loss at the hands of Wales in the quarter-finals of the Euro 2016. They kicked off this World Cup qualifying campaign in fashion and are unsurprisingly leading the pack in the group, having won five and draw one of their six group fixtures. Roberto Martinez’s men sit at the top of the group H table with 16 points under their belts, four points clear of the second-placed Greece. The Red Devils looked very well-organized at both ends of the pitch throughout this qualifying campaign, but their goalscoring form has been the main reason for their performances so far. The Belgians netted 24 goals in six rounds so far, which is the second best-attacking record in this World Cup qualifying campaign. Romelu Lukaku is their topscorer at the moment with six goals under his belt, while Dries Mertens, Christian Benteke and Eden Hazard have bagged seven goals between them. At home, Belgium are undefeated in three qualifiers throughout this campaign, scoring 13 goals and conceding just two in this term.

Belgium Team News

Eden Hazard has been called-up despite he is still injured, but Radja Nainggolan’s omission has raised eyebrows. Steven Defour has been offered a recall for the first time since November 2016, while Jordan Lukaku has been rewarded with a call up following his fine start to the season at Lazio.

Gibraltar Preview

This is just the second qualification campaign for major tournaments for Gibraltar and they are still searching for their first point after 16 competitive fixtures. The minnows come into this tie on the back of a 20-game winless streak across all competitions since a 1-0 win over Malta back in June 2014. They have suffered back-to-back defeats in the opening six games of this World Cup qualifying campaign and have only scored three goals in this term. They were beaten 1-2 at home by Cyprus in their most recent qualifier, despite the fact that they leveled the game before halftime after their defender Joseph Chipolina scored an own-goal in the first ten minutes of the match. Away from home, Gibraltar are winless in their twelve away games across all competitions and are currently on a ten-game losing run. The most worrying fact is that the minnows have conceded at least three goals in each of their last ten away games across all competitions. All three of Gibraltar’s goals throughout this qualifying campaign have been scored by three different players, including one from Lee Casciaro. The 35-year-old striker is currently Gibraltar’s joint all-time leading scorer since joining UEFA, along with Jake Gosling.

Gibraltar Team News

Gibraltar have no fresh injury concerns ahead of this game.
