Bayern Munich Preview

Jupp Heynckes is back to making managing at Bayern Munich look a piece of cake, as the reigning Bundesliga champions stormed to a 5-0 victory at Freiburg on Saturday afternoon. A Julian Schuster own goal sent Bayern on their way in the first half, before Kingsley Coman added a second shortly before half-time. The second half saw yet more goals, with Thiago Alcantara, Robert Lewandowski and Joshua Kimmich all netting for the hosts, who closed the gap between themselves and Borussia Dortmund to a single point. Losing 3-0 to PSG in their previous Champions League outing resulted in Carlo Ancelotti losing his job, with the Parisians now having the upper hand in regards to finishing top of Group B. That said, they now enter this fixture with the goal of continuing their fantastic home record in the Champions League, winning seventeen of their last eighteen games in Munich. Real Madrid are the only team to defeat them during that time, with back-to-back wins over Celtic all but confirming their place in the last 16.

Bayern Munich Team News

Manuel Neuer (foot) and Franck Ribery (knee) are both long-term doubts for Bauern. Juan Bernat (ankle), Javi Martinez (shoulder) and Arturo Vidal (thigh) are unlikely to feature.

Celtic Preview

Celtic were far from their fluent best at Dundee last weekend but still retained top spot in the Scottish Premiership with a 1-0 win at Celtic Park. Midfielder Oliver Ntcham scored the game’s only goal just after the hour mark, with perhaps the biggest positive for Celtic coming in the shape of no more injuries to first-team players. Despite still retaining his unbeaten record in the Scottish Premiership, the early signs suggest Brendan Rodgers will be pushed harder by Derek McInnes and his Aberdeen side this season, who are level on points with Celtic after nine games. This kicks off what will be a tough week of away fixtures for the Hoops, who travel to Hibernian at the weekend before facing Aberdeen in a crunch league fixture next Wednesday evening. Defeating Anderlecht away from home has done Celtic’s chances of playing European football post-Christmas a huge favour, particularly given the convincing manner of the performance and scoreline. PSG and Bayern are naturally the prohibitive favourites to qualify, though Celtic are not complete strangers to the extraordinary in the Champions League.

Celtic Team News

Scott Brown (hamstring) and Stuart Armstrong (calf) will be huge losses to Celtic’s midfield. Jozo Simunovic (hamstring) is a doubt, but Erik Sviatchenko (knee) may return after being involved in training.
