Bayern Munich vs Bayer Leverkusen Match Prediction

By Gary Gillles

Defending Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich open their season on Friday when they play host to Bayer Leverkusen. Bayern have won the title five years running now, dating back to the 2012/13 season and will be hoping to extend that to six this term. Bayer Leverkusen come off a largely disappointing campaign in which they had to scrape and claw for every point to see off a relegation threat last term. Bayern have already won a trophy this season after defeating Borussia Dortmund on penalties in the German Super Cup after a dramatic late own goal got them there. Robert Lewandowski scored the first goal for Bayern against his former side. Then then saw off Chemnitzer FC in the DFB Pokal on Saturday with a 0-5 win. Lewandowski had a brace, while Kingsley Coman, Franck Ribery, and Mats Hummels also got on the score sheet. Bayer Leverkusen come in to the match off the back of a German Cup match with Karlsruher in which they won 0-3 away in extra time. Dominik Kohr got the ball rolling before Joel Pohjanpalo scored. Leon Bailey made it three goals in the opening half of extra time to complete the victory.

Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Leverkusen have just one goal in their last four meetings with Bayern, and that came from the departed Calhanoglu. They did play tight matches against each other last term, but so much has changed in the summer months. It's a huge step up for Leverkusen's new manager, and there is sure to be a disconnect there for a little while. Because of that, we see Bayern winning and keeping a clean sheet. That is at 20/21, which is still better odds than you can get elsewhere. Also, you have to like Bayern to win by three or more here. If Bayern win by three, you can get 4/1 odds. With Leverkusen's defense so injury-ravaged, they will come under fire quite often here.

Bayern Munich Preview

Bayern Munich have had a bit of a worrying preseason, and even manager Carlo Ancelotti has admitted to as much. However, there is little reason to panic over their form at such an early stage. Injuries and a lack of fitness held them back against BVB, but they still battled back and forced their way to hoisting the trophy. The biggest news in the off season has been the retirements of the duo of Xabi Alonso and Philipp Lahm. Those influential players have gone now, and it's time for the likes of Joshua Kimmich to step up and replace them. Douglas Costa has left the side, while it's rumored that Renato Sanches will depart as well. Incoming players include Niklas Sule and Sebastien Rudy, both from Hoffenheim and James Rodriguez.

Bayern Munich Team News

As noted, Ancelotti is dealing with some injury issues. Center backs Felix Gotze, Javi Martinez, and Jerome Boateng, left back Juan Bernat, center midfielder Thiago, and new attacking midfield star James all look set to miss out. However, Manuel Neuer looks to finally be fit again and good to go for the new season. Arjen Robben and David Alaba also look set to take part barring any fresh concerns.

Bayer Leverkusen Preview

Bayer Leverkusen are hoping that they can strengthen themselves by subtraction this summer. New manager Heiko Herrlich has a lot of work cut out for him, and he'll have to do it without very many additions to the squad so far and lots of subtractions. Chief among those include Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez and Hakan Calhanoglu, who missed much of last season after being ruled ineligible by FIFA for breaking a previous contract. They have signed center back Sven Bender and center midfielder Dominik Kohr, but they have failed to do much else. Striker Stefan Kiesling has decided to finish his contract rather than retire, so that will be a boost for them.

Bayer Leverkusen Team News

As far as injuries go, Herrlich has a raft of them early on. Both Sven and Lars Bender have injury issues, while defensive positions have taken quite a hit. Center backs Jonathan Tah and Tin Jedvaj and right back Benjamin Henrichs are out, while striker Stefan Kiessling appears to be injured as well.
