Bayern Munich vs Arsenal Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Bayern Munich take on Arsenal at the Allianz Arena on 15/02/17 as the two sides renew their rivalry in the Champions League once again. Bayern extended their lead at the top of the Bundesliga table to seven points as they defeated Ingolstadt 2-0 away from home courtesy of late drama. Arsenal, toom won by a 2-0 scoreline, bouncing back from a chaotic week surrounding the club to beat Hull City. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Bayern Preview

Bayern Munich left it late away to Ingolstadt last time out, scoring twice in second-half stoppage time to steal three points away from the spirited relegation-threatened side. Arturo Vidal was the man who finally broke the deadlock for Carlo Ancelotti’s side, as Bayern took full advantage of Leipzig’s slip-up on the same day. Arjen Robben then doubled the lead just two minutes later to put the game to bed, and open up a comfortable seven-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga table with fourteen games to go. Having been in this position so many times before, it’s difficult to imagine them not going on to win the title from this position onwards. Ancelotti, too, has a history of winning league titles, as well as having three Champions League titles to his name. In Europe, Bayern progressed to the last 16 of the competition in 2nd place after Atletico Madrid finished top of their group, resulting in a draw with top of their group Arsenal. Throughout the multiple meetings between the two sides in recent seasons, Bayern are yet to go out to Arsenal in the Champions League, with this now being the fourth time in five seasons that the two teams have met in the competition. Ancelotti came to the Allianz Arena with the expectancy of delivering a league title and that is expected to continue here.

Arsenal Preview

Arsenal returned to winning ways after a disastrous week and a half that ultimately saw their title challenge come to an end. It was far from the excellent Arsenal we’ve often seen at home in the Premier League, but they just did enough to get over the line in the end. Alexis Sanchez controversially gave the hosts the lead when the ball appeared to go in with the aid of his hand, leaving Hull feeling particularly hard done by. They responded with a spirited effort, but were unable to find a breakthrough and were killed off in injury-time when Sanchez converted from the penalty spot to make it 2-0. Arsenal - for once - finished top of their Champions League group this season, and must’ve wondering what they need to do to get a favourable draw for once. Mesut Ozil has come in for some criticism of late for a lack of influence on games, and this is a real opportunity for him to prove a point on home soil against international teammates. The Gunners were unbeaten in their three away Champions League games in the group stages and will hope to avoid the 5-1 defeat suffered in November 2015 to give themselves a fighting chance when the return fixture is played at the Emirates Stadium. Anything from a one-goal defeat or better will probably sit well with Arsene Wenger, whose team needs to try and find a way of scoring an away goal.

Bayern Team News

Jerome Boateng (shoulder) is ruled out until at least the end of this month and will be a significant loss in the Bayern defence. Franck Ribery (thigh) is a doubt, while Arjen Robben will hope to start after his goalscoring appearance from the bench at the weekend.

Arsenal Team News

Mathieu Debuchy (hamstring), Santi Cazorla (achilles) and Aaron Ramsey (calf) are all ruled out for Arsenal in this one. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is set to start in central midfield after an excellent performance last time out.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Arsenal will fancy their chances here against a Bayern side who don’t appear as strong as the sides they have faced in recent seasons. However, in the Allianz Arena, I’m expecting Bayern to still be too strong and to take a first-leg lead here.
