Bayer Leverkusen vs Hamburger SV Match Prediction

By William Hall

Two shock strugglers go head to head this weekend as Bayer Leverkusen welcome Hamburg to the Bay Arena in the Bundesliga. Bayer Leverkusen come into this one off the back of a 2-1 defeat away to Hertha Berlin whereas Hamburg suffered their third straight defeat at home to Borussia Dortmund. With both sides looking to get back to winning ways this weekend, this game shapes up to be a thriller. Read on for a full match preview complete with all our best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Betting Tips and Predictions

With both currently out of form and looking desperately for a win, I can see this being a very end to end and entertaining encounter. In seven of the last eight times these two have played, the home team has come out on top, with the other game ending a draw. If that is anything to go by this weekend, Bayer Leverkusen is the bet. I couldn't go against that as their recent form has been better than Hamburg. However, I would say there are better bets with better value to have in this game.

The worrying thing for Hamburg is that they have been unable to score in all three of their last games and with a home game against Leipzig and away tie with Hannover, they would have been expected to get one at least. I struggle to see them keeping a clean sheet this weekend, meaning if they are to get anything from the game, they must hit the back of the net at some point. Here are my favourite betting tips and predictions for the match.

Bayer Leverkusen Preview

Bayer Leverkusen have had a shocking start to the season, losing three of their opening five games, drawing and winning the other two. Before their last defeat to Hertha Berlin, they put four past Freiburg to make many, including me, think they would kick on from theirs. However, Hertha had another idea and quickly got the better of Bayer with two goals in the first 25 minutes. Bayer Leverkusen tried to get back into the game and finally did in the 84th minute, but it proved too late to get anything from the match. With just one win in five for Bayer, it is not something that they will be used to and this weekend will want to get back to winning ways to put the pressure on the top teams in the league.

Bayer Leverkusen Team News

Bayer Leverkusen have three players out for the visit of Hannover this weekend with Kai Havertz (unknown), Lars Bender (foot injury) and Tin Jedvaj (shin injury) all sidelined.

Hamburger SV Preview

The season started very well for Hamburg winning two games out of two against Augsburg and Cologne. However, since they have lost three on the bounce which has seen them slip right down the table. Even at this early stage, getting points on the board is so important. It was a defeat at home to Dortmund during the week that took it to three straight losses for the side. They started very slow and midway through the first half Dortmund got the breakthrough. After that, Hamburg struggled to create chances to get back into the game which was punished in the second half as Dortmund ran away with the three points. A better performance is needed this weekend if they are going to be any threat to Bayer Leverkusen.

Hamburger SV Team News

Hamburg will be without eight players for the trip to Leverkusen this weekend. Here is the full list along with their specific injuries; Albin Ekdal (back injury), Bjarne Thoelke (medial collateral ligament injury), Mats Kohlert (muscle injury), Rick Van Drongelen (groin injury), Aaron Hunt (thigh injury), Filip Kostic (thigh injury) and Nicolai Muller (ACL).
