Bayer Leverkusen Preview

Bayer Leverkusen's theme this summer has been bringing in the new while giving their youth players a chance. New manager Heiko Herrlich has insisted, much to the owners' delight presumably, that they do not need reinforcements- well at least he was. He might be changing his tune now a little after the run they have had. It's fair to say that their first two results went as expected: losses away to Bayern and then a good home draw with Hoffenheim. However, they came out after the international break and they showed very poorly in a 3-1 loss away to Mainz. It started so brightly for them as they took a 22nd minute lead through Dominik Kohr's goal. However, they failed to get the lead into the half, giving Yoshi Muto an equalizer just on the cusp of the whistle. From there, the momentum was with Mainz and they scored 12 minutes after the break through Abdou Diallo. Suat Serdar all but locked up the points in the 71st minute for the home side. The loss will leave their supporters worrying that this season might not be the rebound year that they were hoping for, and it might just lead Herrlich to rethink what the team needs.

Bayer Leverkusen Team News

Bayer Leverkusen will once again be forced to go in without young defender Tin Jedvaj due to injury. Along with him as injured parties are defensive midfielder Julian Baumgartlinger, center back Panagiotis Retsos, and forward Joel Pohjanpalo.

Freiburg Preview

Freiburg have started off their season with two points from three matches. In truth, they would have been expected to get one- assuming the draw with Frankfurt to begin the season- by everyone nearly. But they did slightly better than that. After losing 4-1 away to RB Leipzig, a none too surprising fate, they rebounded last weekend to capitalize on good timing to draw 0-0 at home with Borussia Dortmund. Dortmund were clearly not at their very best right after the international break on Saturday, and it ultimately showed through with the result in the end. Despite a red card for midfielder Yoric Ravet of Freiburg, the home side buckled down and banded together to make the issue much, much tougher on Dortmund. Their resilience was mighty, seeing them keep just 18% of the ball after the 29th minute sending off, and it will have been a most encouraging result to have taken such a great moral victory away.

Freiburg Team News

Right winger Yoric Ravet will miss out due to suspension after his red card in the draw last weekend. The biggest injury hit to the side appears to be striker Nils Petersen. Also out due to injuries are center midfielders Vincent Sierro and Jonas Meffert and center backs Georg Nideremeier, Manuel Gulde, and Marc Kempf.
