Bayer Leverkusen vs Atletico Madrid Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Bayer Leverkusen take on Atletico Madrid at the BayArena on 21/02/17 as both teams look to get the upper hand in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie. Leverkusen will be full of confidence after a successful trip to Augsburg saw them come away 3-1 victors in the Bundesliga. Atletico, likewise, had an away trip to cherish as they went one better than their German counterparts with a 4-1 win over Sporting Gijon. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Leverkusen Preview

Bayer Leverkusen made it back-to-back Bundesliga wins last time out, as they sealed a comfortable 3-1 win away at Augsburg. The talented Karim Bellarabi opened the scoring for Leverkusen midway through the first half, before Javier Hernandez added a second to give his team a two-goal cushion at the break. Dominik Kohr struck for the home side to provide Leverkusen with a nervy five minutes or so, however that was soon put to bed when Hernandez sealed his brace for the afternoon. After also beating Champions League-chasing Eintracht Frankfurt 3-0 the weekend prior, Leverkusen have begun to look much like their former selves in recent displays, with this shockingly just the third occasion where they have won successive games in the league this term. It’s no coincidence that their recent upturn in form has corresponded with the return to fitness of winger Bellarabi, who has completed his first two ninety minutes since a friendly for Germany in late August. In those two appearances, he has provided two assists as well as getting on the scoresheet last time out. His team are currently seven points adrift of the top four at this stage and require a real strong run of form if they are to even sneak into the Europa League qualification places at this stage. The Germans will take heart from their 1-0 first leg home win over Atletico at this stage of the competition in 2015, with this fixture almost two years to the day of that previous meeting.

Atletico Preview

Atletico Madrid’s recent improvement continued on Saturday, as they romped to an eventual comprehensive 4-1 win away to struggling Sporting Gijon. They made relatively hard work of the game, with the scores locked at 1-1 with ten minutes remaining after Yannick Carrasco’s effort was cancelled out by Sergio Alvarez’s equaliser. But substitute Kevin Gameiro emphatically turned the game in Atletico’s favour, as the French international scored a five-minute hat-trick between the 80th and 85th minute to stun the hosts with the quickest La Liga hat-trick in 22 years. Despite not living up to the expectations of previous seasons, Atletico have now lost just twice in their last sixteen games in all competitions, with those two defeats coming against Las Palmas and Barcelona. Beaten finalists in two of the last three seasons, the Champions League remains the only major silverware missing from Diego Simeone’s mantelpiece at the Vicente Calderon. With many believing this is Simeone’s last season in charge at Atletico, this could be the competition they set out to win as their priority at the start of the season. They proved their European pedigree by finishing top of a group which also featured Bayern Munich, and four of their five wins during the group stages came without conceding.

Leverkusen Team News

Jonathan Tah (thigh) and Lars Bender (muscle) are both doubtful to feature in this one. Forward Admir Mehmedi has been rated with a better chance of playing as he looks to shake off a thigh strain.

Atletico Team News

Juanfran (thigh) and Augusto Fernandez (cruciate ligament) are both ruled out until March for Atletico. Diego Godin (groin) and Tiago (knee) are both doubts, but Jan Oblak (shoulder) is back in training.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Bayer Leverkusen’s recent upturn in form means this game may be slightly more difficult to predict than originally was the case. Despite this, Atletico are a well-oiled machine who know the ins and outs of this competition and I’m expecting them to take a positive result back to Madrid for the second leg.
