Betting Tips and Predictions

Basel know just how important this game is if they are to secure their place in the last 16, as CSKA Moscow face United in the final group game. United have made light work of this group so far and I’m expecting them to maintain their 100% record in Europe so far.

Basel Preview

An emphatic second-half performance saw Basel come out 5-1 winners over FC Sion as they continue to try and chase down Young Boys at the top of the Swiss Super League table. Sion, who entered the game at the bottom of the league, took a shock lead in the third minute through Marco Schneuwly, but two goals in two second-half minutes from Michael Lang and Mohamed Elyounoussi saw the hosts throw the game on its head. Renato Steffen and Kevin Bua both scored from the penalty spot and the latter added Basel’s fifth in stoppage time as the team returned from the international break with a morale-boosting victory. In their last Champions League game, they were on the receiving end of a comeback from CSKA Moscow - a result which has now left their Champions League future hanging in the balance. Both sides face Benfica and United in their final two group matches and whoever is able to take the most points from those games will likely take second place in the group. Though Basel have accrued a reputation for being a tough team to face away from home in the Champions League, the Swiss side have only won two of their previous nine outings at St. Jakob-Park in Europe.

Basel Team News

Taulant Xhaka is suspended for Basel, while Germano Vailati (shoulder) is ruled out. Ricky van Wolfswinkel (broken foot) could return.

Manchester United Preview

Manchester United were forced to battle from behind against Newcastle United at the weekend, coming back from a goal down to defeat Rafa Benitez’s side 4-1. Dwight Gayle struck inside the first 15 minutes to give Newcastle a shock lead, but Anthony Martial and Chris Smalling replied before the break to give United a 2-1 lead heading into half-time. Paul Pogba marked his return with a goal to put the game beyond reach for Newcastle, as Romelu Lukaku ended his goalscoring drought with 20 minutes to go. Yet perhaps the biggest positive for Jose Mourinho to take from the game was the return of Zlatan Ibrahimovic from injury, with the Swede playing around 15 minutes from the bench following a serious knee injury. With that victory, United have now won all nine of their games at Old Trafford in all competitions this season, scoring a total of 28 goals during that time. In the Champions League, United are still not guaranteed a place in the last 16 of the competition, though it would take something spectacular for them not to progress to the knockout rounds from their current position. With wins in each of their two away games in Europe so far this season, perfectionist Mourinho will be pushing his team to finish the group stages with a 100% record.

Manchester United Team News

Defenders Eric Bailly (leg) and Phil Jones (thigh) are both doubts for the away side here so Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof should continue in defence.
