Basel vs Manchester City Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Basel welcome Manchester City at the St. Jakob-Park on Tuesday night for the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie. Basel looked impressive throughout the group stage campaign, but their recent form haven’t been that good. Meanwhile, Manchester City have been flying high across all competitions throughout this season and they will look to kick off this tie in a positive manner. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news, match stats and odds all in our SBAT preview. Feel free to visit our Bet of the day page to check our best daily tips.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Basel looked solid at home throughout the group stage, but Manchester City are a class apart. The Citizens have been scoring goals for fun this season and enter the fray on the back of a comfortable 5-1 home win over Leicester in the Premier League at the weekend. We fancy Manchester City to win here and we also expect plenty of goals.

Basel Preview

This is Basel’s third appearance in the first knockout stage of a Champions League campaign. The Swiss side finished second in their group A table, three points behind the eventual winners Manchester United. They have won four of their six group fixtures, including a surprising 1-0 home victory against the Premier League side Manchester United. The negative fact is that Basel haven’t been very prolific on home soil in the Champions League over the past two months. They have won just three of their last nine home games in the Champions League, while losing three. Basel have just returned from the winter break and kicked off the second half of the Super League season with a 0-1 home loss against Lugano. However, they bounced back with a comfortable 0-2 away victory at Thun at the weekend. The bad news is that Basel’s record against English clubs isn’t great as they have won just once while lost four of their five meetings. Basel have scored eleven goals throughout the group stage campaign, including four from their top scorer Dimitri Oberlin.

Basel Team News

Germano Vailati, Luca Zuffi and Antonio Signorini are all doubts ahead of this clash.

Manchester City Preview

Meanwhile, Manchester City have finished top of the group F table despite losing against Shakhtar Donetsk in the final group fixture. This makes 4th consecutive appearances in the round of 16 for Manchester City. Last season, the Citizens were knocked out from this stage of the competition, as they lost on away goals against Monaco. Their away record in the Champions League over the past few years haven’t been that good, but they looked dominant during the group stage. They beat Feyenoord 4-0 and Napoli 4-2 before losing at Shakhtar Donetsk in the final round, in a game in which they had nothing to play for. Pep Guardiola’s men proved that they have no real opponent in the Premier League this season, as they sit comfortably at the top of the table with 16 points clear of the second-placed Manchester United. They are undefeated in four league outings at the moment, including a thrashing 5-1 home victory against Leicester at the weekend. However, the Citizens have struggled a little bit on the road recently, having won just two of their last five competitive trips.

Manchester City Team News

Fabian Delph, Gabriel Jesus, Leroy Sane and Benjamin Mendy are all missing through injury, while David Silva is a doubt.
