Basel vs Benfica Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Basel welcome Benfica at the St. Jakob-Park on Wednesday night, with both teams looking for their first points of their Champions League group A. Basel lost 3-0 on the road at Manchester United last time out, in a game in which they delivered just two shots on target. Meanwhile, Benfica threw away a one-goal lead to succumb to a 1-2 home loss at the hands of CSKA Moscow a fortnight ago, with Haris Seferovic scoring the opener in the first five minutes of the second half. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news, match stats and odds all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Both teams to score is a strong bet in this one as both sides have struggled at the back recently. Seven of Basel’s last eight home games across all competitions have seen both teams getting on the scoresheet, while Benfica netted at least one goal in eight of their last nine away games across all competitions.

Basel Preview

Basel’s form over the past three weeks hasn’t been great as they have lost three of their last five games across all competitions. The Swiss side qualified for the Champions League group stage by winning an eighth consecutive Swiss title in the 2016/17 season. This having been said, this is Basel’s eight group stage campaign and their 4th in the last five years. Last season, Basel ended fourth in group A, having collected just two points from their six group games. The bad news is that the Swiss team are winless in the last nine Champions League games, conceding at least two goals in six of these. In addition, Basel have only won one of their last seven home fixtures in the Champions League and are currently on a four-game winless streak. However, their home form over the past seven months has seen them lose just once in their last 20 home games across all competitions. The Swiss club have already lost three of their nine games domestically so far this season and find themselves only third in the standings, six points behind the current leaders Young Boys. Ricky van Wolfswinkel has impressed since his arrival this summer as he is currently the league’s topscorer with seven goals in his nine league appearances.

Basel Team News

Serey Die, Germano Vailati, Mohamed Elyounoussi and Omar Gaber are all doubts ahead of this game.

Benfica Preview

Benfica did the domestic double last season and are now in the Champions League group stage for the 13th time. Benfica lost 4-1 on aggregate at the hands of Borussia Dortmund in the round of 16, but they managed to reach the quarter-finals of the competition in 2015/16 season. The Portuguese started this Champions League campaign with the wrong foot, losing 1-2 at home at the hands of CSKA Moscow, despite the fact they took the lead soon after the break. The Portuguese team were on a three-game winless streak across all competitions prior to their 2-0 home win over Ferreira in the Primeira Liga at the weekend. Away from home, Benfica have only won three of their last 13 away games in European competitions, registering six defeats in the process. Furthermore, their recent away form has seen them win just once in their last six games across all competitions. The only good news is that Benfica’s overall record against Swiss opponents reads three wins and three draws. In addition, Benfica are undefeated in two meetings with Basel in the Champions League, conceding just once in the process. Jonas has been Benfica’s standout player in this early part of the season as he is the Primeira Liga’s topscorer with eight goals and two assists in his seven league appearances.

Benfica Team News

Eduardo Salvio, Mile Svilar and Lisandro Lopez are all doubts ahead of this trip.
