Barnsley vs Wolverhampton Wanderers Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) Championship fixture features two sides in opposite halves of the Championship table. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Barnsley suffered a comprehensive 4-1 defeat at the Den to Millwall in the FA Cup Third Round in a game that Brad Potts had given them the lead in but also saw Joe Williams sent-off. Their last league fixture came on New Year’s Day and they picked up a crucial three points when they beat Sunderland 1-0 through an Ethan Pinnock effort. Wolves continued their unbeaten run as they drew 0-0 at home to Swansea in the cup. In the league, they were 3-0 victors over Brentford on January 2nd with a strike each from Ruben Neves, Barry Douglas and Diogo Jota. The reverse fixture came in September at Molienux and it was game that the Black Country outfit won 2-1. Bright Enobakhare gave them an 80th minute lead before the Tykes thought they had claimed a point through Adam Jackson only for Alred N’Diaye to net in injury time to claim all three points.

Betting Tips and Predictions

It is hard to really take on the visitors considering they have lost just two of 13 on the road this season while Barnsley have won just three at Oakwell this season. Given the Black Country outfit have won five of their last six on their travels I could not put anyone off backing them but I want to find a way to enhance the price. Four of the last five Wolves victories and seven of their last nine have been to nil and with the Tykes netting in just one of their last five at Oakwell taking the visitors to win to nil looks a good bet. Another way to enhance the odds if to take Wanderers to be ahead at half-time and then again at full-time. 22 of the 37 league goals the Yorkshire outfit have conceded have come in the first-half and they could find themselves behind early here.

Barnsley Preview

A three-game unbeaten run and five points from the holiday period has allowed the Tykes to put a little distance between themselves and the relegation zone. They now sit in 19th place but this is just two points above Burton in 22nd. At Oakwell, they are without a victory in their last five though each of their last two have ended in draws. They have managed to find the back of the net just once in their last five in front of their own fans. 22 of the 37 league goals Barnsley have conceded this season have come in the first-half. Just one of their last five have gone over 2.5 goals though over the campaign it is an equal split of 13 over and 13 under.

Barnsley Team News

Andy Yiadom (sprained ankle) and Ryan Hedges (thigh) are doubts ahead of this game.

Wolverhampton Wanderers Preview

Ten points from four games over the festive period has enabled the Black Country outfit to extend their lead at the top. They are now 12 points clear with a superior goal-difference of 18 from their nearest rivals. Away from Molineux, they are unbeaten in their last six winning five of these and drawing the other. They have the joint-best attacking road record (along with Fulham) and the best away defensive record. Wolves have been ahead in 14 of their 26 so far at half-time and have been behind just once going into the interval. Just five of the 20 league goals they have conceded this season have come in the opening half.

Wolverhampton Wanderers Team News

Danny Batth and Ruben Vinagre will miss out through suspension while Joe Mason (stomach) and Phil Ofosu-Ayeh (ankle) are doubts. Carl Ikeme is a long-term absentee as he fights Leukaemia.
