Barnsley vs Sheffield Wednesday Match Prediction

By Gary Gillles

This Saturday lunchtime (12:15) game is a Yorkshire derby between two sides in the bottom-half of the Championship. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Barnsley continued with their struggles going own 1-0 to QPR at Loftus Road in their last fixture. The Tykes could find no way back into the game despite playing against ten-men for almost 20 minutes. Sheffield Wednesday are also out form and they suffered a 3-1 home defeat to Birmingham last time out. Wednesday had Marco Matias and Daniel Pudil dismissed while a Lucas Joao goal proved a very small consolation for a disappointing result. The reverse fixture came at the end of October and it ended 1-1 making it the second successive draw between the two and the third in their last four meetings. On that occasion, Adam Reach had put Wednesday ahead only to be pegged back through Harrison Barnes and that was where the scoring ended.

Betting Tips and Predictions

This is a game in which bookmakers are struggling to split the pair which seems reasonable given their respective struggles of late. I think a draw might be the way to play this as Wednesday have drawn three of their last four while Barnsley have drawn three of their last four at Oakwell. The Tykes also saw manager Paul Heckingbottom leave and the first task of any caretaker manager is to keep things tight and try to grind out a point from such ties. Neither of these sides are blessed with a goalscorer and have scored a combined five between them in their last six (so five in 12 in total) so also look to have a small interest on the correct score being 0-0.

Barnsley Preview

The Tykes have had a tough week as they have seen manager Paul Heckingbottom leave the club and join Leeds. Lincoln boss Danny Cowley and Ipswich manager and former player Mick McCarthy are the names heading the betting to be next boss. At Oakwell, they are seven without a victory though they have drawn three of their last four which includes meetings with Wolves and Preston. A lack of home goals is a real concern with only Birmingham (11) scoring lower than their 13 this campaign. Five of the last seven Barnsley matches have gone under 2.5 goals with four of these going under 1.5 goals. 25 of the 44 league goals that they have conceded this season have come in the opening 45 minutes.

Barnsley Team News

Adam Jackson (knee) and Zeki Freyers (unknown) are doubts while Dimitri Cavare will return from his suspension.

Sheffield Wednesday Preview

The Owls are now six without a win in the league picking up just three points from these matches. They are now down to 17th just seven points above the bottom three and the Tykes are the only bottom eight side they face in their next seven. Away from Hillsborough, they are without a win in three but did pick up encouraging draws at Sheffield United and Middlesbrough recently. A lack of road goals is an issue with blanks in their last three but they have kept clean sheets in their last two. Three of the last four Sheffield Wednesday league games have ended goalless and just one of their last seven have seen both teams find the back of the net. 16 of the 31 goals they have scored this season have come in the first-half.

Sheffield Wednesday Team News

Daniel Pudil and Marco Matias will miss the game through suspension following their red cards last weekend. Tom Lees (groin) and Joost van Aken (hip) are closing in on returns but Gary Hooper (hip), Kieran Westwood (groin), Steven Fletcher, Sam Hutchinson (both knee), Barry Bannan (groin) and Fernando Forestieri (knee) are long-term absentees.
