Barnsley vs Sheffield United Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday lunchtime (12:15) fixture is a Yorkshire derby with both side in need of points at opposite ends of the table.  Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Barnsley had Easter Monday off after their game at Nottingham Forest was cancelled due to a waterlogged pitch.  This means they were last in action on Good Friday and they drew 2-2 with Bristol City (Kieffer Moore and Brad Potts got their goals) in a game they dominated.

Sheffield United drew their successive game last time out after drawing 1-1 at home to second placed Cardiff.  They seemed on course for all three points when Leon Clarke gave them the lead only to concede a 91st minute equalizer.

The reverse fixture came in mid-August with a Billy Sharp giving the Blades a 1-0 home victory.  The tie also saw both sides have a man dismissed with Leon Clarke and Angus MacDonald sent-off for a clash.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Sheffield United are deserved favourites for this game but this being a local derby and the fact they have won just one of their last six puts me off backing them.  I prefer looking at some bets in markets other than the full-time result one.

Both teams to score looks the play as this happened in five of the last six at Oakwell and both sides will see this as an opportunity to get all three points.  This also bring in over 2.5 goals which while going against head-to-head trends in the current circumstances offers a lot of appeal.

Barnsley Preview

The Tykes have slipped into the bottom three having taken just three points from their last six and seven from their last 12.  They face a difficult run in with Bolton the only one of their remaining seven fixtures in the bottom six.

At Oakwell, they have been poor with no victory in 12 though six of their last nine have finished all-square.  Five of their last six at their own ground have seen both teams find the back of the net.

Kieffer Moore has netted three times in his last eight league appearances and two in his last four.  Their last five meetings with Sheffield United have produced a total of just six goals with three going under 1.5.

Barnsley Team News

Matt Mills (ankle) is closing in on a return to first team action.

Sheffield United Preview

The Blades are now unbeaten in five but four of these have ended drawn which is frustrating their hopes of cracking the top six.  They have a mixed run left with four against teams in the top ten and two up against sides in the bottom five.

Away from Bramall Lane, they have won just one of their last six, drawing two of these and losing the other three.  A lack of road goals has been an issue with them failing to fire in four of their last six.

In three of their last five in the Championship Sheffield United have kept clean sheets and conceded just two in total in these ties.  Around 38% of the goals they have scored have come in the opening and closing 15 minutes of the fixture.

Sheffield United Team News

Paul Coutts (broken leg) is out for the season while Jamal Blackman is suspended.
