Barnsley vs Reading Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday (30th) afternoon (15:00) fixture features two sides in the bottom-half of the Championship. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. Barnsley continued their winless run as they drew 0-0 at home to Preston North End on Boxing Day. The game was low on chances and quality but a point helps the Tykes keep themselves above the relegation zone. Reading suffered a 2-0 defeat at Ashton Gate in their Boxing Day encounter with Bristol City. The result was probably a little harsh on the Royals who saw a little bit more of the ball and created as many goalscoring opportunities. The reverse fixture between these sides came at the end of November as the original game was rescheduled to League Cup commitments. The match saw the Royals comfortable 3-0 victors with a goal each from Dave Edwards, Joey van den Berg and Jon Dadi Bovardsson.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Bookmakers cannot split the pair and nor can I. Given that two of the last three for Barnsley have ended all-square and three of the last eight for Reading have also ended in a draw taking this game to do the same looks a sensible play. The Tykes have failed to score in three of their last four and the Royals in two of their last three so sticking with the draw theme back this game to end 0-0.

Barnsley Preview

The Tykes are now eight without a victory though two of the last three have ended in a draw. They sit in 20th place just three above Sunderland in 22nd and this marks the first of a three-game run against sides in the bottom ten. At Oakwell, they had lost three straight until they drew on Boxing Day with Preston. A lack of goals at their own ground is a clear issue as they have failed to net in their last four and have scored five times in the last nine. Four of the last six Barnsley have played have gone over 2.5 goals though they have contributed just two of those goals. Tom Bradshaw is their only player to have netted in their last eight.

Barnsley Team News

Brad Potts (illness) is back in training while Ryan Hedges (thigh), Matty Pearson (calf), and Adam Jackson (knee) are out.

Reading Preview

It is now three straight defeats for the Royals and just one point from their last four which has seen them drop to 17th. They are just eight points and five places above the drop zone though four of their next five come against teams in the bottom six. Away from the Madejski Stadium, they have lost their last two but prior to that had two wins and a draw in three. Four of their last six on their travels have gone over 2.5 goals and seen both teams find the back of the net. Around 72% of the goals that Reading have scored this season have come in the second-half with around 59% in the final 30 minutes. Five of the last seven meetings between these sides have gone over 2.5 goals.

Reading Team News

Callum Harriott, Tennai Watson (both hamstring), Sam Smith, Stephen Quinn and Joe Mendes (all knee) are doubts. Jordan Obita (cruciate) is out for the season
