Barnsley vs Middlesbrough Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture features two sides in different halves of the Championship table. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. Barnsley picked up a useful three points headed into the international break as they defeated Millwall 3-1 at the Den. Tom Bradshaw grabbed a brace in that game while Mamadou Khady Thiam also converted a penalty to secure the victory. Middlesbrough continued a disappointing week at the Riverside Stadium being held 2-2 by Brentford in their previous match. Twice they had to fight back to secure a point first through Martin Braithwaite and then Fabio. The last time these two sides met at Oakwell in a competitive game was in 2015 in the FA Cup in a game that Middlesbrough won 2-0. Daniel Ayala who netted that day is one of the few players who played in that game who still plays for their team now as does Adam Clayton who was shown a red card.

Betting Tips and Predictions

This is a tricky looking game where you could make a case for both teams being value. Given the weak form of Boro on the road and home advantage you could make a case for Barnsley at bigger prices. Then again, the North-Eastern outfit have had some tough road games to starts the season while the Tykes were turned over when they faced Villa the only side of quality they have entertained. My recommendation then is to avoid the match markets and look elsewhere for the bets. Seven of ten Barnsley have played this season have produced exactly two or three goals including each of their five at Oakwell. This has happened in four of five on the road for Middlesbrough so take the exact total game goals to be two or three. Given that around two-thirds of the goals Boro have scored have come in the second 45 minutes it looks worth taking the highest scoring half to be the second one.

Barnsley Preview

The Tykes have taken 11 points from their first ten fixtures (one under what most teams have played) and they sit in 18th place. They have taken four from their last two games and impressive manager Paul Heckingbottom seems to be working out how to get the best of a limited setup. At home, it has been a mixed bag with two victories, one draw and two defeats from the five they have played in the league. Four of the five at Oakwell have produced exactly three goals with the other seeing two goals. They have netted 13 goals for the season and conceded 15 both of which put them in the middle reaches of the goals for and goals against tables. Their total of 28 goals in their matches is the sixth highest in the division and averages out at 2.8 goals per fixture.

Barnsley Team News

Angus MacDonald and James McCarthy are both suspended.

Middlesbrough Preview

After 11 games and just 16 points Boro who were the ante-post favourites are finding the Championship harder than anticipated. They have taken just two points from their last three and must look to take advantage of a fixture list that sees just two of their next eight against top-half sides. On the road, they lost their opening two matches but have since gone unbeaten in three winning at Bolton and drawing at Villa and Fulham. Their away ties tend not to be too exciting with a total of nine produced from five with three of those coming in one fixture against league whipping boys Bolton. Lack of goals is clearly the problem for the North-Eastern side with 13 netted this season which has them in the bottom-half of the goals for table. They have conceded just nine though which gives them the joint second best defensive record.

Middlesbrough Team News

Rudy Gestede (thigh) will hope to return to action.
