Barnsley vs Derby County Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) game features two sides in opposite halves of the Championship table.  Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Barnsley suffered their fourth straight loss as they went down 3-1 away to Bolton Wanderers. A Tom Bradshaw penalty in the 22nd minute drew them level but they shipped two more in a disappointing loss. Derby were made to work before putting away Burton in their last fixture which they won 1-0 at the iPro Stadium.  Johnny Russell got the goal on that occasion to help the Rams bounce back from a loss to Ipswich. These two sides have already met this season in September at Oakwell in the League Cup in a game the Tykes won 3-2.  Adam Hammill, Tom Bradshaw and Adam Jackson got the goals for the Yorkshire side that day while Johnny Russell and Mason Bennett netted for the East-Midlands outfit.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Given that the home side are struggling for form losing four straight I am surprised that the visitors are such a good price to win the game.  They have won three of their last four on the road at higher-ranked teams than Barnsley so a match bet on Derby looks the sensible approach. Six of the last eight the Tykes have conceded have come in the first-half so back the Rams to score earlier than the market suggests which is listed at 48:00.

Barnsley Preview

It is now four straight defeats for the Tykes and just one point from five matches as they have slid down the table into 19th. Three of their next five are at home but each of these games is against a side above them. At Oakwell, they have won just one of their last seven and lost three of their last four. A lack of home goals is an issue with just two netted from their last four and three of these seeing them blank. Six of the last eight they have conceded have come in the first-half and four of these in the opening 30 minutes. Four of the last six they have played against the Rams have seen a goal in the final quarter of an hour.

Barnsley Team News

Steven Mallan and Lloyd Isgrove (both thigh) and Adam Jackson (knee) are doubts.

Derby County Preview

The Rams are on a decent run of form with three wins, one draw and one defeat from their last five and just two defeats in 13. Victory last time out put them in sixth and three of their next five are against teams in the bottom eight. Away from the iPro Stadium, they are unbeaten in six with victories at Middlesbrough, Leeds and Norwich and draws at Brentford, Cardiff and Fulham. Each of their last four on their travels and seven of their last eight on the road in all competitions have gone over 2.5 goals. Derby have conceded just one goal in their last four games and kept a clean sheet in three of these. Matej Vydra has netted 11 times this season and has scored five of the last seven for the East Midlands outfit.

Derby County Team News

Jason Shackell (calf), Darren Bent (hamstring), Jamie Hanson (calf), Sam Winnall and Mason Bennett (knee) are a few weeks away from a return.  Kyle McAllister (groin) is a long-term absentee.
