Barnsley vs Aston Villa Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This live Saturday early evening (17:30) game features two sides in the bottom-half of the Championship. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. Barnsley picked up a useful point last weekend in the Championship at Preston thanks to a goal from Brad Potts.  They were in League Cup action in midweek and a goal each from Adam Jackson, Tom Bradshaw and Adam Hammill saw them progress through 3-2 against Derby. Aston Villa had a frustrating time of it in midweek as they played 86 minutes against the ten-men of Middlesbrough but could not find a breakthrough. They saw a ton of the ball and created chances but just could not get a goal though they were also reduced to ten-men themselves when Henri Lansbury was dismissed on the 64th minute. The Tykes came out on top of their two meetings last season winning the game at Villa Park 3-1 while the match at Oakwell ended 1-1. One player who will be happy to line up against Villa will be Tom Bradshaw who got a brace against them last season.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Bookmakers continue to under-estimate how difficult a side to beat Barnsley are at Oakwell. They have lost just one of their last nine and that came against an Ipswich side who somehow netted two from two chances. They tend to draw a few (seven of their last 11) so you will want to keep the draw on side but this looks a great bet considering that Villa have won just two of their last 14 league road trips. Tom Bradshaw has netted in two of the last three league homes and three of four if you put in the League Cup midweek tie so he looks worth a little interest here in the first-goalscorer market with each-way paying out on him netting at any time.

Barnsley Preview

Given that they have played only six when most teams have played seven then the Tykes will be content to be in 15th place with seven points.  After defeats in the first two things have picked up for Barnsley with two wins and a draw in their last four. At home, it is two victories and one defeat in the league with Forest and Sunderland losing at Oakwell but Ipswich took all three points. If you consider the end of last season each of their last five home league matches has seen exactly two or three goals and nine of their last ten. Tom Bradshaw and Ryan Hedges have two goals each for a side that has netted eight this season with six of them coming at home. They have conceded eight in this campaign though only three of them have come at their own ground.

Barnsley Team News

Angus MacDonald will miss the game through suspension.

Aston Villa Preview

Seven points from their first seven games will not be the start Aston Villa fans or their owner will have wanted and Steve Bruce is a man under pressure to produce results. They are unbeaten in four in the league though three of these have finished all-square. On the road, it is just one point from three and if you add this to last season it is no victory in the previous six.  A lack of goals is an issue with just two netted on their travels this season and over the two seasons nine from their last 14. The absence of Jonathan Kodjia is being felt up front where they have netted just seven times and four of them have come from midfielder Conor Hourihane. The defence has not been as secure as they would have hoped with John Terry on board having netted nine times with six of them in away ties.

Aston Villa Team News

Andre Green (hamstring) and Joshua Onomah (leg) are doubts while Henri Lansbury (suspension), Jack Grealish (hip) and Rushian Hepburn-Murphy (thigh) are all ruled out for this fixture.
