Barcelona vs Real Madrid Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Copa del Rey winners Barcelona will take on La Liga champions Real Madrid on Sunday night at the Camp Nou for the first leg of their Spanish Super Cup tie in the first El Clasico of the 2017/18 season. Barcelona head into this tie on the back of a 5-0 win over Chapecoense-SC in the annual Trofeo Joan Gamper, with Gerard Deulofeu, Sergio Busquets, Leo Messi, Luis Suarez and Denis Suarez all getting on the scoresheet for Ernesto Valverde’s side. On the flip side, Real Madrid has already played their first competitive fixture of the new season as they beat Manchester United 2-1 in the UEFA Super Cup in midweek thanks to goals from Casemiro and Isco. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Barcelona still have a strong squad despite Neymar’s departure during the summer, and I’m expecting them to win here, given the fact that are playing in front of their own fans for the first leg. Barcelona’s home form over the past eight months has seen them winning 20 and drawing three of their last 23 home fixtures across all competitions. In addition, Barcelona are undefeated in their last three meetings with Real Madrid across all competitions, scoring three goals in two of these.

Barcelona Preview

Barcelona had a near perfect pre-season, having won four and drawn once in their five friendly fixtures. They have won all three of their International Champions Cup fixtures, beating the likes of Juventus, Manchester United and Real Madrid. Their 2-3 triumph over Real Madrid was Neymar’s last game for Barcelona, and this will be Barcelona’s first competitive game without the Brazilian winger. Barcelona have been pretty quiet throughout this transfer window as they only brought back Gerard Deulofeu from Everton for €12m, Nelson Semedo from Benfica for €30.5m and centre-back Marlon from Fluminense for €5m. The Catalan giants definitely have money in their pocket after Neymar’s monumental €222m transfer to Paris Saint Germain and according to reports, they are very close to signing Borussia Dortmund’s winger Ousmane Dembele. Philippe Coutinho remains Barcelona’s top target despite they had a £93 million bid rejected and Liverpool have made a statement by insisting he is not for sale. However, I’m expecting Barcelona to focus more on Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi until they find a proper replacement for Neymar, although Gerard Deulofeu looked decent in pre-season and he can feature in Barca’s attacking trio. The Blaugrana are the Spanish Super Cup defending champions after beating Sevilla in the final and they were the runner-ups one year before. Overall, Barcelona have won five Spanish Super Cups in their last eight appearances.

Barcelona Team News

There are no fresh injury concerns for Barcelona ahead of this tie and the good news is that Rafinha, Andre Gomes and Thomas Vermaelen are all back in training.

Real Madrid Preview

Meanwhile, Real Madrid are the La Liga reigning champions, after winning the title last season with three points more than the runner-ups Barcelona. Los Blancos have already won a piece of silverware this season as they beat Manchester United in the UEFA Super Cup in midweek thanks to goals from Casemiro and Isco. Real looked very strong in their victory over Manchester United despite the fact that they have struggled for form in pre-season. The most interesting fact is that this is Real Madrid’s first meeting with Barcelona in the Super Cup since 2012 when Los Blancos managed to win on away goal rule following a 4-4 aggregate over the two legs. Actually, that was the last time that Real Madrid managed to win the Super Cup and since then they only finished as runner-ups in 2014/15 when they lost at the hands of their city rivals Atletico Madrid. Similar to Sunday’s opponents, Real Madrid’s summer transfer campaign has been quiet as they only brought in two new players in the shape of Dani Ceballos from Real Betis for €17m and Theo Hernandez from Atletico Madrid for €30m. However, eight players have left the club and there are some big names in the shape of Alvaro Morata, Danilo, James Rodriguez, Pepe and Fabio Coentrao. Head-to-head, Real Madrid have only won once in their last six meetings with Barcelona across all competitions while losing four in the process.

Real Madrid Team News

Madrid has no fresh injury concerns ahead of this trip.
