Barcelona Preview

Barcelona are playing a different type of football this season, but that worked very well for them, especially after Neymar’s departure at the beginning of the season. The Blaugrana sit comfortably at the top of the La Liga table, eight points clear of the second-placed Atletico Madrid. Barcelona looked incredibly solid at the back throughout this La Liga campaign, having conceded just 13 goals in 28 rounds. Valverde’s men enter the fray on the back of a 14-game unbeaten streak across all competitions, including their 1-1 away draw at Chelsea a fortnight ago. At home, Barcelona are undefeated in 21 home games across all competitions, a run that stretches back to the middle of August when they lost 1-3 against Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup. Regarding their Champions League record over the past few years, Barca have been in the round of 16 every year from 2004/2005 onwards, winning eleven of those 13 ties. Last season, Barcelona managed the biggest comeback in Champions League history against PSG to win their round of 16 tie. However, Barcelona’s last two campaigns have ended in the quarter-finals, losing to Juventus last season and to Atletico Madrid in 2015/16. The good news is that the Blaugrana have won all three home games in the Champions League this season, scoring eight goals and conceding just once in the process.

Barcelona Team News

Denis Suarez, Marc Cardona, Nelson Semedo and Sergi Samper are all missing through injury, while Jose Manuel Arnaiz and Sergi Roberto are both doubts.

Chelsea Preview

Chelsea’s form over the past two months have been a complete mixed bag with five defeats, four wins and one draw in their last ten competitive fixtures. They were winless in three competitive games prior to their 2-1 home win against Crystal Palace in the Premier League last weekend. The Blues only sit 5th in the standings, already nine points behind the second-placed Manchester United and 25 points adrift of the current leaders Manchester City. Their Champions League record over the past two months have also been poor as Chelsea have won just three of their last nine fixtures. They are now winless in three Champions League outings, but the most recent two of these have ended as 1-1 draws. Conte’s men record in the Champions League round of 16 reads eight wins and four defeats. They suffered defeats at the hands of PSG in both 2014/15 and 2015/16 in the round of 16. In addition, Chelsea’s away form over the past three months have seen them win just two of their last ten competitive trips. Furthermore, Chelsea are winless in six visits to Camp Nou in the Champions League, although five of these have ended in draws.

Chelsea Team News

Ross Barkley and Antonio Rudiger are both doubts, while David Luiz and Isaiah Brown are out through injury.
