Azerbaijan vs N.Ireland Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Azerbaijan will look to return to winning ways in the World Cup qualifying group C when they face Northern Ireland in Baku on Saturday afternoon. Azerbaijan were thrashed 1-4 at home by Germany last time out, with their consolation goal being scored by Dimitrij Nazarov just after the half-hour mark. On the contrary, Northern Ireland won 2-0 at home over Norway thanks to two first-half goals from Jamie Ward and Conor Washington. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Although that Azerbaijan are currently on a three-game winless streak in this World Cup qualifying campaign, they have been a strong side on home soil over the past few years. They are playing very defensively at home and have conceded three or more goals only against strong sides in the shape of Italy and Germany. I’m not expecting goals here, but I’m fancying Azerbaijan to secure at least one draw.

Azerbaijan Preview

Azerbaijan kicked off their World Cup qualifying campaign in a decent manner with two consecutive wins over San Marino and Norway along with a nil-nil draw against the Czech Republic. The most impressive fact is that Azerbaijan haven’t conceded a single goal in that term. However, they looked very poor in their most recent two group fixtures, registering back-to-back defeats at the hands of Northern Ireland and Germany while conceding eight goals. Sandwiched in-between these defeats, they managed to beat Qatar 1-2 in a friendly fixture back in March. The Azeri team currently sit in 4th in the group C table with seven points after five rounds, three points off the 2nd-placed and their Saturday’s opponents Northern Ireland. This means that they really need to win here in order to give themselves a chance of making it to Russia. Their goal scoring form has let them down throughout this qualifying campaign, as they only managed three goals in five group fixtures. Their home form over the past three years has been a complete mixed bag with five defeats, three wins and two draws in their last ten home fixtures across all competitions. The good news is that Azerbaijan are unbeaten in their two home meetings with Northern Ireland, conceding none in the process.

Azerbaijan Team News

There are no fresh injury concerns for Azerbaijan ahead of this tie.

N.Ireland Preview

Meanwhile, Northern Ireland made a surprise progress to the last 16 of the 2016 Euros and they kicked off the World Cup qualifying campaign in a similar manner. They have only lost once in their five group fixtures and currently sit in second with ten points under their belts, just two points clear off the 3rd-placed Czech Republic. Their sole defeat came at the hands of Germany in October 2016, but they bounced back with back-to-back victories over Azerbaijan and Norway without conceding a single goal. Actually, the Northern Irish have kept three clean sheets in their last four games across all competitions. Overall, Northern Ireland have only conceded two goals throughout this qualifying campaign while scoring ten. The bad news is that Northern Ireland have struggled on the road over the past few years, having won just once in their last seven away games across all competitions. In addition, the Northern Irish are winless in their two visits to Azerbaijan while scoring none. However, they did well to beat Azerbaijan 4-0 in the reverse fixture thanks to goals from Kyle Lafferty, Gareth McAuley, Conor McLaughlin and Chris Brunt.

N.Ireland Team News

The Northern Irish will be without Craig Cathcart due to a knee injury. Liam Boyce should be fit for the game despite the fact he was taken off in the friendly game against New Zealand. Paddy McNair, Corry Evans, Chris Baird, Will Grigg, Jamie Ward and Luke McCullough are also missing through injury.
