AZ Alkmaar vs FC Utrecht Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

AZ Alkmaar will look to get back to winning ways in the Eredivisie when they welcome FC Utrecht at the AFAS Stadion on Sunday at lunchtime. AZ Alkmaar only managed a 1-1 away draw at FC Groningen last time out, despite the fact that Alireza Jahanbakhsh gave them the lead at halftime. Meanwhile, FC Utrecht fought back from one-goal down to secure a 3-1 home win over SC Heerenveen thanks to a brace from Jean-Christophe Bahebeck and another goal from Yassine Ayoub. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news, match stats and odds all in our SBAT preview. Feel free to visit our Bet of the day page to check our best daily tips.

Betting Predictions and Tips

There have been plenty of goals in the most recent games between these two sides and I think this will be the case here as well. The last five meetings between these two have seen more than three goals scored and both teams looked vulnerable at the back in this early part of the season.

AZ Alkmaar Preview

AZ Alkmaar have enjoyed an excellent run of form between the middle of August to the middle of September, but they started to struggle recently. They suffered back-to-back defeats against Excelsior and Feyenoord prior to the International break, and only managed a 1-1 away draw at FC Groningen last weekend. The main problem is that AZ have struggled to find the back of the net over the past month, as they only scored once in the most recent three league fixtures. Prior to their recent run, Alkmaar managed to score at least two goals in five of six games across all competitions. They currently sit only in 7th in the Eredivisie table tied on 13 points with FC Utrecht, just three points behind the second-placed Ajax. At home, AZ were on a six-game winning streak prior to their back-to-back defeats against Excelsior and Feyenoord in their most recent two home league fixtures. The only good thing is that AZ picked up a comfortable 3-0 win over Utrecht in their most recent home meeting with the Red and Whites. Wout Weghorst is enjoying another great Eredivisie campaign, as he has already scored six goals in his eight league appearances.

AZ Alkmaar Team News

Levi Opdam and Ron Vlaar are both doubts, but Calvin Stengs and Marko Vejinovic are both missing through injury. The good news is that Myron Boadu is back in training following his knee injury.

FC Utrecht Preview

FC Utrecht, on the other hand, have been up and down in this early part of the new Eredivisie season, registering four wins, one draw and three defeats in their eight league games. Utrecht were on a three-game winless streak in the league prior to their 3-1 home victory over SC Heerenveen last weekend. Utrecht have scored two more goals than AZ Alkmaar in this early part of the season, but they have also conceded more in this term. Actually, they hold the 4th joint worst defensive record in the division, having allowed 15 goals in eight rounds. Their away form over the past three months has also been poor as Utrecht have only won two of their last ten games across all competitions. The good news is that the Red and Whites picked up victories in two of their last four visits to the AFAS Stadion, scoring at least two goals in three of these. In addition, Utrecht managed to beat AZ Alkmaar 4-0 in the Eredivisie Europa League play-offs towards the end of May. Utrecht are tied on 13 points with their Sunday’s opponents, which means they are just three points adrift of the second-placed Ajax. Both Utrecht’s summer arrivals in the shape of Cyriel Dessers and Jean-Christophe Bahebeck have been in fine shape in this early part of the season, as the pair bagged seven goals and one assists between them. Zakaria Labyad has also played a vital part in Utrecht’s performance throughout the season, helping the team with three goals and two assists.

FC Utrecht Team News

Simon Makienok, Patrick Joosten and Chris Gurkan David are all doubts, but Anouar Kali is out through an ACL injury.
