Atletico Madrid vs Real Madrid Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Atletico Madrid take on Real Madrid at the Estadio Vicente Calderon on 06/05/187 as the hosts look to perform a miracle turnaround in the second leg of this Champions League semi-final. Atletico virtually booked a top-three finish last time out as they beat Eibar 1-0 at home. Real Madrid meanwhile made multiple changes but still beat Granada 4-0 to keep themselves in the driving seat in the La Liga title race. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Real are a step and a half into the final at present, with their first leg victory making them huge favourites to return to the Champions League final for a second year running. That said, Atletico’s gritty, blue-collar mentality will see them believing they have every chance of turning this game around. I’m expecting Atletico to win here but not do enough to turn the tie on its head and for Real to make the final.

Atletico Madrid Preview

Atletico Madrid put aside the disappointment felt in their first leg defeat at the Bernabeu last weekend with a home victory against Eibar - a result which mathematically confirmed their place in the Champions League for next season. The in-form Saul Niguez scored the only goal of the game for Atletico, with this the midfielder’s third goal in six games, coming with just twenty minutes to play to give some positivity to what has been a disappointing week for the club thus far. The manner of their 3-0 defeat to Real last time out was unexpected, as they were convincingly beaten by their city rivals in what many had anticipated to be a tight, tense affair, especially given the recent head-to-head meetings in La Liga. Atletico can be buoyed, though, by the fact they have won nine of their last ten home Champions League matches and have just one defeat from their previous twenty-two at home in this competition. Their defensive ability has ultimately been key to their success in recent seasons, but it let them down at the Bernabeu last time out, with this the first time they have conceded three at home since September 2014. It will take a huge effort for Atletico to have any chance of progressing to the final here and face an uphill task from the opening minutes of the game.

Jose Gimenez (thigh) is still sidelined through injury, while fellow defenders Juanfran (thigh) and Sime Vrsaljko (knee) are also doubtful. Augusto Fernandez is still working his way back from a cruciate ligament injury and isn’t expected to be available here.

Real Madrid Preview

Real Madrid moved one step closer to the La Liga title last time out, cruising to a 4-0 despite a multitude of changes, highlighting the depth in this current squad. It took just three minutes for Real to break the deadlock, as James Rodriguez bundled in from Lucas Vazquez’s cross from close range, before the Colombian then headed home from Fabio Coentrao’s pacy delivery from the left. Alvaro Morata then hit a brace of his own, first smashing home from Danilo’s cutback to put the result beyond doubt after half an hour and added a tint of gloss to the scoreline when he bagged a clinical individual strike. In La Liga, Zinedine Zidane’s men still sit second behind Barcelona on goal difference, but still have a game in hand on their El Clasico rivals, facing Celta Vigo away in what may well be the pendulum swinging match in terms of the title. Balancing that and their Champions League commitments became a whole lot easier following their first leg result, although Zidane’s team selection on Saturday - leaving out the likes of Toni Kroos, Luka Modric and Cristiano Ronaldo - hints he will not be taking Atletico lightly this time around. With wins in each of their last three Champions League away matches, they have an impressive record away from home coming into this fixture as they look to make it four years running in which they’ve knocked Atletico out of the competition.

Dani Carvajal (hamstring) and Gareth Bale (calf) are both ruled out for Real Madrid through injury. Pepe has returned to training following a broken rib, with Zidane likely to revert back to the same side which took a 3-0 lead in the first leg.
