Atletico Madrid vs Bayer Leverkusen Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Atletico Madrid welcome Bayer Leverkusen to the Estadio Vicente Calderon on 15/03/17 as the home team look to seal their place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. Atletico secured a late 1-0 win over Granada last time out, beating the strugglers away from home. Leverkusen meanwhile made it four games without a win in all competitions as they drew 1-1 with Werder Bremen at the weekend. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Atletico Madrid’s home record in Europe is one of the best in this competition and gives them real reason to feel confident coming into this one. Although Leverkusen pose a threat, I’m anticipating a fairly comfortable victory for the home team.

Atletico win - 8/13

Atletico to score in both halves - 11/8

Atletico to win to nil - 7/4

Atletico Preview

Atletico strengthened their grip on fourth place in the La Liga table at the weekend after beating Granada 1-0 at the Estadio Nuevo Los Cármenes. They were frustrated for much of the game and it seemed as if they were going to come away with just a point until Antoine Griezmann intervened. The French international headed in Filipe Luis’ cross at the far-post, putting it back across goal and into the far corner. Diego Simeone’s side were fantastic away to Leverkusen in the first leg, scoring four goals in an uncharacteristic attacking display on the road in Europe, conceding two also in the process. Their last two results have seen Atletico beat Valencia and Granada without conceding, and they will be confident of booking their place in the last eight in this one. The Calderon has become one of the most difficult places to visit in European football in recent seasons, with Atletico winning in each of their last eight home games in the Champions League. Simeone’s men have also kept a clean sheet in seven of their last eight at home in Europe, a statistic which doesn’t make for great reading for Leverkusen who need to score at least three goals to stand a chance of progressing.

Leverkusen Preview

Bayer Leverkusen’s winless run was extended to four games in all competitions after they drew 1-1 to Werder Bremen last time out. The winless run - which began when they lost 4-2 to Atletico in the first leg - is symptomatic of the season Leverkusen are having, consistently taking one step forward before two back. Kevin Volland opened the scoring for Leverkusen just seven minutes into the game as they appeared to come out with a point to prove. However, they couldn’t add a second and were duelly punished when veteran striker Claudio Pizarro levelled the scores and made it 1-1. Tayfun Korkut has now seen his side concede thirteen goals in their last four matches in both the Bundesliga and Champions league, with this a game they can ill afford to concede early in if they want to have any hope of progressing through to the last eight in this one. Atletico’s home form in this competition makes Leverkusen’s chance of getting a win slim, and their away record further highlights that point. With just one win in their last nine away from home in the Champions League this is set to be a real uphill task for the Bundesliga outfit if the stats are to be believed.
