Atlanta United vs San Jose Earthquakes Match Prediction

By William Hall

Atlanta United ended a succession of away defeats with a 2-0 win over Columbus Crew. The game once again displayed the brilliant attacking nature of Gerardo Martino’s team, who managed to score through Hector Villalba in each half. San Jose Earthquakes managed to grab the bragging rights in the local derby after a 2-1 win over LA Galaxy. The away team scored the opening goal through a brilliant finish from defender Jelle Van Dame. Chris Wondolowski’s deflected goal in the 75th minute gave San Jose hope, and they scored deep into injury time through Shea Salinas to secure a win.

Here we have our SBAT match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Betting Tips and Predictions

A major reason for Atlanta United remaining in the top six of the MLS has been their home form. While Gerardo Martino’s team have managed four consecutive wins at the Bobby Dodd Stadium, San Jose have suffered three defeats in the last five away games. I would back Atlanta United for a win.

San Jose have been able to stop the opposition from scoring much more effectively, as only one opponent has put three goals past San Jose in the away games this season. Despite Atlanta’s immense goal scoring prowess, I would back this game to produce less than 2.5 goals.

Atlanta United Preview

Atlanta United will be relieved at ending a poor away form, which was starting to threaten their play-off ambitions. The win over Columbus Crew was only the second away win since April. However, Atlanta have been a formidable outfit at the Bobby Dodd Stadium with five consecutive wins in all competitions. Even in the 2017 MLS season, Atlanta have now managed four consecutive home wins. A feature of the team’s victories has been the attacking display, and Atlanta are the joint best scoring team in the season along with Chicago Fire. Both teams have 35 goals in the 18 league games. Hector Villalba is now the joint top scorer alongside Hugo Almiron with eight league goals.

Atlanta United Team News

San Jose Earthquakes have rediscovered the form that they demonstrated at the start of the season, as the club has managed four wins in the last five matches of all competitions. The club’s league form has to improve even more, as they have just two wins in the last five. However, San Jose are unbeaten in the last three MLS games. A big test now awaits the team, as they go on a string of three games away from home. San Jose’s next home game is not until the end of July. Chris Wondolowski is the top scorer at San Jose with seven league goals.

San Jose Earthquakes Preview

Gerardo Martino will be without Jacob Peterson (leg) and Kenwyne Jones (knee) due to injury. Romario Williams might miss the game due to international call-up.

San Jose Earthquakes Team News

San Jose Earthquakes will be without Nick Lima due to suspension. Players unavailable due to injury include Fatai Alashe (knee), Harold Cummings (hernia), Quincy Amarikwa (knee), Marc Pelosi (knee), and Marvell Wynne (heart).
