Athletic Bilbao vs Valencia Match Prediction

By Bharath Ramm R

Athletic Bilbao produced a comeback 2-1 win over Malaga at the San Mames. Youssef En-Nesyri provided the opening goal just 13 minutes into the game to silence the home crowd. However, the lead lasted only four minutes as Susaeta equalised with a fine finish. The comeback was completed in the 44th minute through San Jose, while En-Nesyri went on to miss a penalty and received a red card in the second half. Valencia picked up a third consecutive win by beating Real Sociedad 2-1 at the Mestalla. Santi Mina scored either side of a goal from Mikel Oyarzabal to provide Valencia with a crucial victory.

Here we have our SBAT match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Valencia have had a difficult time in recent visits to the San Mames, as Bilbao have been able to claim three consecutive home wins over this opponent. Even after picking up a win over Malaga, Athletic Bilbao’s confidence is fragile. The team has managed only two league wins in 2018. Valencia had plenty of chances against Real Sociedad and have been looking good in recent weeks. I would back a win for Valencia. The Valencia team may have picked up three consecutive wins, but the lack of a clean sheet continues to be an obvious disadvantage. Valencia have kept just one clean sheet in 2018 – against a struggling Las Palmas outfit in the Copa del Rey. Athletic Bilbao may not be a prolific outfit, but they have not been bad in front of goal. Backing both teams to score is my pick in this game.

Athletic Bilbao Preview

Athletic Bilbao were relieved at getting the victory against Malaga, as it ends a six-game La Liga run without a victory. It is only the second league win of 2018 for Cuco Ziganda’s team. The club have been spending most of the season outside the European qualification places, as they have been let down by a disappointing home form. During the 2016-17 La Liga campaign, Athletic Bilbao had close to a 70% win rate in the home games. This has now dropped to the low 30s for this current campaign. The heavy reliance upon Aduriz for the goals is a reason, but the striker has contributed 30% of the club’s league goals – the same as last season. Aduriz has eight league goals so far.

Athletic Bilbao Team News

Mikel Rico (thigh), Muniain (knee), Iker Undabarrene (cruciate ligament), Mikel Balenziaga (thigh) are the names missing from action for Athletic Bilbao.

Valencia Preview

Valencia have rediscovered the winning touch once again, as a run of three consecutive victories have put them back on track for Champions League qualification. However, this might have come a little too late for Marcelino’s team, as they conceded the third spot to Real Madrid in the last few days. Real Madrid do not appear in a mood to drop more points, as the Los Blancos have also hit winning form. Valencia will have to keep one eye on Villarreal, who are eight points behind in the fifth place. Santi Mina is now the top scorer at Valencia with 11 league goals after his brace against Malaga.

Valencia Team News

Geoffrey Kondogbia (foot) and Ezequiel Garay (broken leg) are the two names missing from action for Marcelino.
