Athletic Bilbao vs Panathinaikos Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Panathinaikos will be aiming to overturn a one-goal deficit when they travel to the San Mames Barria to take on Athletic Bilbao for the second leg of their Europa League play-off tie. Panathinaikos had a two-goal lead following goals from Robin Lod and Bryan Alfredo Cabezas, but Bilbao managed an amazing comeback thanks to a brace from Aritz Aduriz and another goal from Oscar de Marcos. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Bilbao were unable to find the back of the net at the weekend against Getafe despite the fact that they had 64% of the ball and 13 goalscoring opportunities. They have a small advantage in this clash , but they should be careful as Panathinaikos need just one goal and to keep a clean sheet in order to qualify further in the competition. I’m backing Bilbao to win, but I’m not expecting an entertaining affair.

Athletic Bilbao Preview

Athletic Bilbao did well to fight from two goals down to secure a 2-3 away win at Panathinaikos last week, but they only managed a nil-nil home draw against Getafe in their La Liga opener at the weekend. Prior to this tie against Panathinaikos, the Basque managed to beat Dinamo Bucharest 4-1 on aggregate in the Europa League third qualifying round. Aritz Aduriz continued from where he stopped last year as he has already managed to score three goals in this Europa League qualifying campaign, including a brace against Panathinaikos last week. Last season, Athletic Bilbao were knocked out at the round of 32 following a 4-3 aggregate defeat at the hands of Athletic Bilbao. Their recent form in the Europa League has been pretty strong, as they have only lost once in their last eight games. On home soil, Bilbao have only lost one game in their last 13 Europa League fixtures and are currently on a five-game winning streak. In addition, the Basque club managed to score at least three goals in each of their last four Europa League home games. Overall, Bilbao have suffered just two home defeats in their last 20 games across all competitions.

Athletic Bilbao Team News

Ander Iturraspe and Oscar De Marcos are both doubts ahead of this tie, while Yeray Alvarez is still missing through injury.

Panathinaikos Preview

Panathinaikos had a solid pre-season campaign, but their recent run of form has let them down. They threw away a two-goal lead to succumb to a 2-3 home loss at the hands of Athletic Bilbao last week and have only managed a 1-1 draw on the road at Platanias FC in the Greek Super League at the weekend. Panathinaikos finished second in the Greek Super League play-offs table last term to book their place in the Europa League qualifying this season. The Greeks are no strangers to Europe though, as they have been involved in the Europa League qualifiers over the past three years. However, they have endured a disappointing Europa League campaign last season, finishing bottom of the group G table with just one point to their name after six group games. This season, they managed to beat Qabala 3-1 on aggregate, and they also looked good in the first part of their first-leg clash with Bilbao last week before conceding three goals in a row. Their recent Europa League away record have seen them lose just two of their last six games. The most worrying fact is that they have failed to score in three of those and they need to score at least one goal here in order to survive in this tie.

Panathinaikos Team News

Paschalis Staikos is a doubt ahead of this clash.
