Athletic Bilbao vs Malaga Match Prediction

By Bharath Ramm R

Athletic Bilbao come on the back of two consecutive losses; the first was a 2-0 defeat against Atletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano. Kevin Gameiro and Diego Costa scored in the second half to hand Bilbao a first defeat in three. The Basque outfit managed to beat Spartak Moscow 4-3 on aggregate in the second leg of the Europa League last 16. Malaga remain at the bottom of the table after a 2-1 loss against Valencia. Even though Ideye Brown provided a lead after 27 minutes, Valencia made a comeback with late goals from Francis Coquelin and Dani Parejo (penalty). Miquel was sent off in the build-up to the penalty.

Here we have our SBAT match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Betting Tips and Predictions

The recent run of form for Athletic Bilbao has been poor and they have only claimed two wins in the last five meetings with Malaga. However, this game is likely to end up as a home win due to Malaga’s disastrous run of form. Malaga may have recently picked up their first away win of the season, but Athletic Bilbao are unbeaten in the last six at home. I would back a win for Athletic Bilbao. The goals from Malaga have been close to non-existent when it comes to away matches, as the team has scored only five goals in the 12 away matches – two of those goals came in the win over Real Sociedad. I would back a clean sheet for Athletic Bilbao.

Athletic Bilbao Preview

Athletic Bilbao continue to hold their position just above the relegation zone, but the progression into the quarter-finals of the Europa League is a huge boost for the club. The Spaniards will once again be up against a team from Eastern Europe, as Lokomotiv Moscow are the opponents. Bilbao have been struggling to get momentum into the game, but the team will be at the San Mames for the next two La Liga matches. After having shown decent home form, Bilbao will be confident about returning to the top 10, as they are only five points behind Real Betis. Aduriz leads the scoring charts at Bilbao with eight goals.

Athletic Bilbao Team News

Muniain (cruciate ligament), Iker Undabarrene (cruciate ligament), and Mikel Balenziaga (thigh) are the players missing from action for Bilbao.

Malaga Preview

Malaga are likely to become the first team to get relegated from La Liga this season, as the team remain a whopping seven points behind the safety positions. After having failed to get a victory in the last nine La Liga outings, it is unlikely that Malaga will add to their three league victories this season. Even after a managerial change that led to the appointment of José Manuel Gonzalez, Malaga have been unable to recover. Gonzalo Castro and Diego Rolan are the top scorers with six goals each.

Malaga Team News

Manager José Manuel Gonzalez will be without Juan Carlos (cruciate ligament), Zdravko Kuzmanovic (calf), Samuel Sanchez Garcia (toe), Keko (leg), Federico Ricca (hamstring), Adalberto Penaranda (hamstring), and Andres Prieto (back) due to injuries, while Ignasi Miquel is suspended after the red card against Athletic Bilbao.
