Athletic Bilbao vs Hertha Berlin Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

The bottom two teams of the Europa League group J will be facing each other on Thursday afternoon, as Athletic Bilbao welcome Hertha Berlin at the San Mames Barria. Athletic Bilbao picked up a narrow 1-0 home win over Ostersunds prior to the International break thanks to a second-half goal from Aritz Aduriz. Hertha Berlin have also won their home meeting with Zorya Luhansk last time out in the Europa League thanks to a brace from Davie Selke. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news, match stats and odds all in our SBAT preview. Feel free to visit our Bet of the day page to check our best daily tips.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Bilbao have been a strong home team in Europe over the past few years and despite their recent struggle, I still think that they should be able to grab three points here. Hertha have been awful on the road this season and they lost both their Europa League away games so far.

Athletic Bilbao Preview

Athletic Bilbao were expected to dominate this group when the groups were drawn back in August, but they have had a terrible start of the season across all competitions. Their 1-0 triumph over Ostersunds last time out was actually their first group victory, having collected just five points in four rounds. This means that Bilbao are still in contention for a place in the next stage of the competition and they can do that with a victory here. They should feel confident ahead of this tie as they have won seven of their last eight European games at home, with their sole defeat coming at the hands of Zorya on matchday two. Domestically, Bilbao had a start to the season to forget as they have only won three of their opening twelve league fixtures. The Basques only sit in 15th in the La Liga table with 12 points after twelve rounds, just five points clear of the bottom three. Bilbao managed to qualify for the first knockout stages of the competition in five of their last six UEFA Cup and Europa League group stage campaigns and they were losing finalists in the 2011/12 Europa League most recently.

Athletic Bilbao Team News

Benat Etxebarria, Iker Muniain and Iker Undabarrena are all out through injury, while Unai Nunez is missing through suspension.

Hertha Berlin Preview

Hertha were on a three-game unbeaten streak across all competitions prior to their 2-4 home loss against Borussia Moenchengladbach in the Bundesliga at the weekend. During their recent undefeated run, Hertha managed a comfortable 2-0 home win over Zorya Luhansk in the Europa League. Similar to Bilbao, that was Hertha’s first victory in this Europa League group stage campaign. Unfortunately, Herta are still rock bottom of the group J table and a defeat here would end their hopes of reaching the round of 32. Hertha’s away form in Europe has been terrible as they have lost their last four games, scoring just two goals and conceding ten. The Germans made it through the Europa League group stage on their most recent appearance back in 2009/10, but they lost at the hands of Brondby in last year’s 3rd qualifying round. Hertha have also endured a terrible form in the Bundesliga this season, having won just three of their twelve games. The biggest issue this season have been their away form as they are winless in seven away games at the moment, including two defeats at the hands of Ostersunds and Zorya in the Europa League.

Hertha Berlin Team News

Julian Schieber, Niklas Stark, Pal Dardai, Mitchell Weiser and Valentin Stocker are all doubts, but Vladimir Darida is still out through a knee injury.
