Aston Villa vs Wigan Athletic Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture features two sides who won their opening Championship game. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. Aston Villa were in action on Monday night when they travelled to Hull and they fought back from a goal down to emerge as 3-1 victors. The goals came from unusual sources as Tommy Elphick, Ahmed El Mohamady and Alan Hutton all grabbed one each. Wigan made a successful return to the Championship after a season out in League One with a 3-2 defeat of Sheffield Wednesday. Michael Jacobs was the hero of the hour as he grabbed a brace while Nick Powell also netted one. These two sides met in the early rounds of the League Cup last season and it was the Midlands outfit who emerged on top running out 4-1 winners. Scott Hogan grabbed a brace on that occasion though he is unlikely to start here.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Given Aston Villa won 14 of 23 at home last season I could not put anyone off backing the home victory but I prefer to look elsewhere to find the value and think I have identified this in a few side markets. Although the hosts were strong at the back last season at their own ground Wigan showed on the opening day they have attacking talent and given they have not failed to net on the road since September 9th I like both teams to score. The Midlands outfit played on Monday night so legs could be tired at this stage of the season so I would also recommend taking an interest on the second 45 minutes to be the highest scoring half.

YES in the both teams to score market

Second 45 minutes to be the highest scoring half.

Aston Villa Preview

Villa were the third highest Championship home points scorers last season winning 14 of their 23 fixtures, drawing seven and losing just two. Though they did end the season going two without a victory at Villa Park. The Midlands outfit were the second highest home goalscorers in the division with only Wolves (47) netting more than their 42. If you include the play-offs they netted just three times in their last four at their own ground. Their defence was strong with only four sides conceding a lower amount of home goals than the 19 Aston Villa conceded. They conceded just once in their last five fixtures in front of their own fans.

Aston Villa Team News

Callum O’Hare (groin), Harry McKirdy (ankle), Jordan Lyden (unknown), Keinan Davis and Scott Hogan (both groin) are all doubts.

Wigan Athletic Preview

The Latics were the strongest road side in League One last season winning 16 times and only losing four matches. They are four without a defeat on the road and have lost just one of their last nine. The Lancashire outfit knew how to fire on their travels bagging 52 times which is a massive 15 more than anyone in the division. You must go back to September 9th for the last time they failed to net on the road. No side had a better away defensive record than Wigan last season in League One who conceded just 18 times. They kept a clean sheet in five of their last eight away from their own ground.

Wigan Athletic Team News

Daniel Burn (foot) and Nathan Byrne (knock) are doubtful for this fixture.
