Aston Villa vs Swansea City Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture features two sides with hopes of promotion this season. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Aston Villa stretched their winless run to four games with a 2-1 loss at Millwall under caretaker boss Kevin MacDonald. Dean Smith, the former Brentford manager, has taken over on a permanent basis and knows that promotion is the goal.

Swansea are now two without a victory following a shock 3-2 home loss to Ipswich who had been without a victory. An own-goal and a Bersant Celina strike were not enough to give them any points from a game they should have won easily according to expected goals.

These two sides were in different divisions last season so you have to go back to the 2015/16 season for their last meetings. The Welsh outfit have won each of their last five head-to-heads.

Betting Tips and Predictions

This is a tough game to call as it marks the start of a new regime for Aston Villa under Dean Smith who used to be in charge at Brentford. He is unlikely to fix the issues overnight but this is a talented squad who might prosper without Steve Bruce. I think the match markets should be avoided and we look elsewhere for the bets.

Both times score around two-thirds (66%) of their goals in the second-half while the Welsh outfit score 50% in the final 15 minutes alone. Back the second-half to be the highest scoring 45 minutes and a late goal which is set at 72:59.

Aston Villa Preview

Villa have had a slow start to the season with just three wins, six draws and three defeats and they will hope Dean Smith is the right man in the dugout. Smith takes over a side in 15th who face none of the top seven in their next six.

At Villa Park, they have lost just once this season but won just two with three finishing all-square. Five of the six the Midlands side have played have seen both teams find the back of the net.

Aston Villa are the joint-fourth best attacking side in the division and are led by Jonathan Kodjia with four while Tammy Abraham has three. Their defence is mess though with only Preston (24) having conceded more than the 20 they have shipped.

Aston Villa Team News

Mile Jedinak (hamstring), Keinan Davis (groin) and Harry McKirdy (dislocated shoulder) are doubts while James Chester is available after suspension.

Swansea City Preview

The Swans have made a reasonable start to life back in the Championship with four victories, five draws and three defeats in their opening 12. They sit 11th in the table with the expected goals data having them a little lower in 15th.

Away from the Liberty Stadium, they have lost just once this season, drawing three times and coming out on top twice. The Welsh side have seen just one goal produced in their last three on the road.

Swansea have the sixth worst attack in the division with 12 just goals with Ollie McBurnie leading the way with four. Their defence has looked good conceding just nine times which is the joint-second best in the league.

Swansea City Team News

Wilfried Bony (cruciate) and Jefferson Montero (thigh) are doubts ahead of this fixture.
