Aston Villa vs Sunderland Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Tuesday evening (19:45) fixture marks a former Sunderland manager playing host to the newest Black Cats boss. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. Aston Villa avoided being the latest top side to suffer defeat at Loftus Road as they went to QPR and won 2-1. Albert Adomah was the hero of the hour as his brace (one penalty) secured them a well-deserved three points. Sunderland secured a 2-2 draw with Millwall in their last game which means they are still winless at the Stadium of Light in 2017. A goal each from Lewis Grabban and Adam Matthews gave them a point that their efforts deserved. The last time these two sides met was in the 2015/16 Premier League season that saw the North-Eastern side take four points from six. Gabby Agbonlahor who is a fitness doubt does have three in the last five meeting between the duo.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Villa might be a popular bet here but I am cautious about taking on a side with a new manager and as such while the home team seem the most likely winners of the game I would look elsewhere for my bets. Both teams to score seems the way to start as this happened in nine of the last ten for Sunderland and in three of the last four at Villa Park. The other bet I like the look of comes in the anytime goalscorer market where Aiden McGeady appeals as he went close a couple of times against Millwall and looks over-priced to net against a Villa outfit with just one home clean sheet in their last five.

Aston Villa Preview

Eight victories, four draws and just two defeats from their last 14 fixtures for the Midlands outfit have seen them rise up the table and they now occupy a play-off position. This marks the first of three fixtures at Villa Park in the next four. At Villa Park, defeat to Sheffield Wednesday put to an end their unbeaten run though still they have taken 15 points from a possible 24 in front of their own fans. Three of their last four at home have gone over 2.5 goals but in the previous four just one did. Aston Villa games produce an average of 2.35 goals per fixture with 11 of their 17 having produced exactly two or three goals. They have conceded just five times this season in the opening 45 minutes.

Aston Villa Team News

Gabby Agbonlahor (calf), Jonathan Kodjia (ankle), Andre Green (hamstring) and Rushian Hepburn-Murphy (knee) are closing in on returns. John Terry (broken toe) and Scott Hogan (stomach) are long-term absentees.

Sunderland Preview

This game marks the start of a new era for the Black Cats as Chris Coleman makes a surprise return from international management to take over as Sunderland boss. He inherits a side in a mess with no league victory since August 13th and he will need all the team building skills he showed as boss of Wales to pull this unit together. Away from the Stadium of Light, it is seven without a victory though four of these have ended in a draw. Six of their eight on the road in the league have seen both teams find the back of the net. The last five Sunderland matches have produced a total of 12 goals in the opening 45 minutes. Lewis Grabban is in good scoring form having netted six times in his last five appearances.

Sunderland Team News

Jonny Williams (unknown) is a doubt after going injured in the first-half while Didier Ndong, Lamine Kone, Josh Maja and Billy Jones (all knee) are unlikely to feature.
