Aston Villa vs Stoke City Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture features two sides just outside the play-offs but in good form. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Aston Villa stretched their unbeaten run to six with a 2-2 at West Brom last time as they were denied by a controversial Jay Rodriguez late goal. They had twice taken the lead through Anwar El Ghazi but in the end had to settle for a point.

Stoke stretched their unbeaten run to eight with a 2-0 victory over Ipswich last weekend thanks to a goal each from Tom Ince (three in three) and Joe Allen. The result somewhat flattered City who were actually behind on the expected goals data.

These two sides last met in the 2015/16 Premier League season with the Potters winning each of their last three against Villa and five of the last six. Three of their last six meetings have ended 2-1.

Betting Tips and Predictions

I imagine Aston Villa will be a popular bet here but I would exercise a note of caution Stoke are difficult opponents and are unbeaten in seven on the road which includes a victory at Norwich. I think the prices on offer in the full-time result market look about right and would look elsewhere for my bets.

The hosts are free scoring at the moment but I would be interested in under 2.5 goals as the Potters will look to frustrate and kept Norwich and Forest scoreless in recent matches.  I would also take the match to have no early goal which is set at 27:00.

Aston Villa Preview

Villa are in good form at the moment with 14 points taken from a possible on 18 on offer in their last six. They sit in eighth place just two places but four points behind Middlesbrough in sixth.

At Villa Park, it is three victories and two draws from their last five with a total of 15 goals netted in these five. Following this tie just one of their next four at their own place is against a top 12 side though that is against Leeds.

The last five Aston Villa games have all gone over 2.5 goals with three of the last four going over 3.5 goals. Three of the last five in the Championship have seen both teams find the back of the net.

Aston Villa Team News

Neil Taylor (hamstring), Albert Adomah (ankle), Henri Lansbury (hamstring), Rushian Hepburn-Murphy (knee), James Bree (knock), Micah Richards (fitness), Birkir Bjarnason, Keinan Davis (both groin) and Harry McKirdy (dislocated shoulder) are doubts.

Stoke City Preview

The Potters are unbeaten in their last eight matches with five of these ending all-square and three in victory. They now sit in tenth place four place and six points outside of a play-off position.

Away from the Bet365 Stadium, they are unbeaten in their last seven with five of these finishing all-square. After their next two the Staffordshire outfit face six straight on the road against bottom-half sides.

Three of the last four in the Championship involving Stoke have seen both teams score and gone over 2.5 goals. This though changes to just one in their last five when looking at their road games.

Stoke City Team News

Ibrahim Afellay (knee) is a doubt while Peter Etebo will miss the third and final game of his three game suspension.
