Aston Villa vs Sheffield Wednesday Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture features two sides looking to be involved in the promotion race.  Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Aston Villa put to an end a five-game winless run in the league with a comfortable 2-0 home defeat of Rotherham.  Tammy Abraham and Yannick Bolasie got a goal each to give them a much needed three points.

Sheffield Wednesday saw their four-match unbeaten run come to an end in midweek as despite a Steven Fletcher goal they lost 2-1 to Nottingham Forest.  They can have few complaints about the result as the East Midlands outfit were the better side.

The two meetings between these sides last season were won by the road team with ending 4-2 at Hillsborough and 2-1 at Villa Park.  Both fixtures last season saw both teams net and over 2.5 goals.

Betting Tips and Predictions

After tipping up Sheffield Wednesday to win on the road and seeing them put in a flat performance I could not be backing them here but at the same time Aston Villa look much too short to be siding with. Both teams to score makes the most sense as this happened in seven of eight in the league for both Villa and Wednesday. John McGinn was the star of the show for the Midlands outfit in midweek and I like the look of him each-way here in the first goalscorer market.

Aston Villa Preview

Villa have won three, drawn four and lost just one of their opening eight though they have won just one of their last six.  They sit seventh in the Championship table while the expected goals data has them down in 16th.

At Villa Park, they are unbeaten in four this season in the league with two victories and two draws.  They have kept a clean sheet in just one of these four matches which came in midweek against Rotherham.

Seven of the eight that Aston Villa have played in the league this season have seen both teams find the back of the net.  Just one of their last four has gone over 2.5 goals all four home games have gone over 1.5.

Aston Villa Team News

Scott Hogan, Keinan Davis (both groin) and Harry McKirdy (dislocated shoulder) are all doubts.

Sheffield Wednesday Preview

The Owls have made a mixed start to the season with three victories, two draws and three defeats from their opening eight.  They sit 13th in the table though the expected goals data feels this is false and has them down in 23rd.

Away from Hillsborough, they have lost three of their four this season though they did win at Reading.  These four matches have produced a combined six goals in the opening 45 minutes with none being goalless at the break.

Each of the last five and seven of the eight Sheffield Wednesday have played in the league this season have seen both teams find the back of the net.  Six of the eight the Yorkshire outfit have played have gone over 2.5 goals and none under 1.5.

Sheffield Wednesday Team News

Joost van Aken (ankle), Kieran Lee, Gary Hooper (both match fitness) are doubts while Fernando Forestieri is suspended.
