Aston Villa vs Sheffield Wednesday Match Prediction

By Gary Gillles

This Saturday afternoon fixture (15:00) features two of the best supported teams in the Championship. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. Aston Villa continued their recent good form as they won 2-0 at Deepdale on Saturday seeing off a fellow top-half side in Preston. James Chester and Robert Snodgrass put them two up after 32 minutes and that was the end of the scoring. Sheffield Wednesday picked up an important three points last time out in front of their own fans as they defeated Millwall 2-1. Adam Reach and Jordan Rhodes were the goalscorers in a result that will ease a little of the pressure on boss Carlos Carvalhal. The home team won the meetings last season with Villa coming out on top 2-0 at Villa Park and the Owls 1-0 at Hillsborough. Jonathan Kodjia got a brace in the game at the Midlands while the match in Yorkshire was settled by a Fernando Forestieri strike.

Betting Tips and Predictions

In terms of recent form and home and away records Villa will be a popular bet this weekend though I would not be backing them myself. If you look at where these two sides will finish they both could be anywhere from second to tenth and as such the prices probably look a fair reflection of the probabilities. Given that seven of the last nine Aston Villa goals have come in the first-half I like the look of the first 45 minutes to be their highest scoring half. Jacob Butterfield has been strangely overlooked since his loan move but he was finally handed his chance in an excellent showing with a man of the match performance from midfield. He also saw a lot of the ball in key positions and registered a shot on target and he goes off at decent odds then to be the first goalscorer here.

Aston Villa Preview

It is now seven points from their last three for Villa and just one defeat in seven which came against leaders Wolves. Going into the weekend they sat in fifth place and do not face a top ten side in any of their next four. At Villa Park, they are going well and have not lost this season in the league winning four and drawing three. These matches tend to be low scoring with their last five producing a total of just seven goals. They have the joint second best defensive record in the division while their attack is ranked in the top eight. Seven of their last nine league goals have come in the first-half and around 58% of their strikes this season have come in the first-half.

Aston Villa Team News

Henri Lansbury (knee), Jack Grealish (stomach), Jonathan Kodjia (ankle), Andre Green (hamstring), Gabby Agbonlahor (calf) and Rushian Hepburn-Murphy (thigh) are all doubts

Sheffield Wednesday Preview

Four points from their last two games has given Carlos Carvalhal some breathing space as manager of the Owls. Wednesday are in 14th place which for a side who made the play-offs in the last two seasons is something of a backwards step. Away from Hillsborough, it has been something of a struggle with just one victory, two draws and four defeats in seven. Each of their last three on the road have seen them suffer a defeat and they are winless in six in all competitions on their travels. The 19 goals they have scored this season has them as a bottom 12 ranked attack while the defence is also ranked in the bottom-half. Around 42% of their goals have come in the first-half but just around 16% in the opening 30 minutes.

Sheffield Wednesday Team News

Sam Hutchinson (knee), George Boyd (shoulder) and Fernando Forestieri (knee) remain long-term absentees. Daneil Pudil also joins them on the sidelines after a hamstring injury.
