Aston Villa vs Sheffield United Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday early evening (17:30) Championship fixture is live on SKYTV and will have implications on the race for the play-off places. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Aston Villa have hit a little blip in form going three without a victory and losing 2-0 away to Derby last time out. The Midlands outfit can have few complaints as they were second best to the Rams. Sheffield United are in a slump as they lost their third straight last time out going down 1-0 to Preston at Deepdale. The Blades can feel a little hard done by as there was little to choose between these two sides but they came home pointless. The last times these sides met was in the 2014 FA Cup at Villa Park in a game which United won 2-1. Their head-to-head meetings tend to produce goals with each of their last six going over 2.5 goals.

Betting Tips and Predictions

I could not put off anyone backing Aston Villa here as Sheffield United are struggling of late but the price just does not scream value to me given the hosts have won just six of 11 in front of their own fans. Villa are tending to beat up on the smaller teams while the Blades are only losing by the odd goal and are not being outclassed so things could turn for them at any point. In a tricky looking game to call perhaps the best way to play this is to look at a couple of individuals in the goalscorer markets. Jack Grealish was sat behind the striker against Derby and as such he was allowed licence to get forward and if the formation is the same again for Steve Bruce he looks good value to net at any time. For the visitors, Jack O’Connell has been getting a few chances from set-pieces in recent weeks and the defender might be on the verge of breaking his goal drought this season.

Aston Villa Preview

It is now no win in three and just two points from these games for Villa though they remain in the top six in fifth place. They face a tricky period of matches with three of their next four against teams in the top ten and the other versus improving Brentford. At Villa Park, they have lost just one of their last seven though none of these have come against a top-eight team. Four of their last five in front of their own fans have seen exactly two or three goals scored. Just one of the last five the Midlands side has played has gone over 2.5 goals while only two of these have seen both teams score. They have been behind just four times this season going into the interval.

Aston Villa Team News

Andre Green (hamstring), Mile Jedinak (shoulder), Jordan Lyden (ankle), Chris Samba (hamstring) and Rushian Hepburn-Murphy are doubts. John Terry (broken toe) and Jonathan Kodjia (ankle) are long-term absentees.

Sheffield United Preview

The Blades are in a poor run of form and have taken just one point from their last five which has seen them slide to sixth place. They have a mixed bag over the holiday period with trips to Derby and Villa and home games against strugglers Sunderland and Bolton. Away from Bramall Lane, they have lost their last two and three of their last four. Goals are normally a feature of their road trips with five of the last seven seeing both teams score and going over 2.5 goals. The Yorkshire outfit are shipping goals with 12 conceded in their last five and no clean sheet in their last ten. Only four of the 22 league fixtures Sheffield United have played this season have been level going into the break.

Sheffield United Team News

John Fleck is still suspended while Ched Evans (ankle) and Kieron Freeman (dislocated kneecap) are doubts. Paul Coutts is out for the season after breaking his leg.
