Aston Villa vs Reading Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture features two sides in opposite halves of the Championship table. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. Aston Villa twice fought back from behind to claim a 2-2 draw with Brentford and keep their unbeaten start to the season. Jonathan Kodjia grabbed a brace in a game the Midlands outfit trailed in the expected goals data to their London opponents. Reading looked on course for their first victory of the season but were pegged back from two goals ahead and had to settle for a 2-2 draw at Blackburn. The result would have been harsh on Rovers who were the better team according to expected goals data. The two meetings between these side last season were won by the home side with it ending 3-0 at Villa Park and 2-1 at the Madejski. Aston Villa midfielder Conor Hourihane netted in both fixtures.

Betting Tips and Predictions

The hosts are strong favourites to win this game and it is hard to argue with those odds given they are a strong home side.  Aston Villa were a little lucky to draw with Brentford but Reading are not in the same class and backing a Villa victory and both teams to score which happened against Wigan and towards the end of last season against bottom-half sides like Burton and Barnsley.  This also leads to the simple bet of both teams to score which has happened in two of four for the Royals and four of four for the Midlands outfit.

Aston Villa Preview

Villa have won two and drawn two in an unbeaten four game start to their Championship season. They have eight points and going into the weekend sat fifth though the expected goals data had them as low as 14th. At Villa Park, they have taken four points from their two matches this campaign and have lost just one of their last 17 regular season matches. Both teams to score and over 2.5 goals have been a feature of both games in front of their own fans. Jonathan Kodjia has found his scoring boots after an injury-hit season in 2017/18 and has three goals in his last two starts. In each of their four in the league Aston Villa have scored in the first-half.

Aston Villa Team News

Keinan Davis, Scott Hogan (both groin) and Harry McKirdy (unknown) are all doubts.

Reading Preview

The Royals looked on course for their first victory of the season but a draw means it is now just one point from four. They sit in 23rd place though the expected goals data feels this is harsh and has them in 17th. Away from the Madejski Stadium, they are ten without a victory in the league though they did pick up that point at Blackburn in midweek. They had gone five without a goal on their travels before that 2-2 draw. Jon Dadhi Bodvarsson has had a good start to the season netting three times in the Championship including a brace in midweek. Reading have yet to be behind going into the break this season in all five in all competitions.

Reading Team News

Garath McCleary (broken ankle), Jordan Obita (cruciate), Chris Gunter (thigh) are all out while Dave Edwards and Callum Harriott (both unknown) are doubts.
