Aston Villa vs Reading Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Tuesday evening (19:45) fixture features two sides in need of points at opposite ends of the Championship table.  Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Aston Villa stretched their winless run to three as they were held to a goalless draw by Hull last time out.  The result means that automatic promotion looks beyond them for this season.

Reading got an immediate response to their new managerial appointment as Paul Clement lead his side to a 1-0 victory over QPR in his first fixture.  The Royals rode their luck though as they survived a late missed penalty and defied the expected goals data.

The reverse fixture came early in the season in mid-August in a game that the Royals won 2-1 thanks to a Mo Barrow strike and a Glenn Whelan own-goal.  Conor Hourihane got the late consolation for Villa who have lost their last two meetings with the Berkshire side.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Aston Villa are the most likely winners of the game but given they are without a win in three I could not be backing them for victory here.  Reading probably make more appeal at the prices but they were a little bit lucky against QPR so I would suggest avoiding the match betting markets.

Around 55% of the league goals Aston Villa have scored have come in the first-half while this rises to 65% for Reading so back the second-half to be the highest scoring.  In addition, take the game to have a late goal (after 74:59) as 43% of the hosts league goals have come in the final 30 minutes and 47% for the visitors.

Aston Villa Preview

Just one point from their last three fixtures has hit their promotion hopes as they are now nine points off an automatic spot and have played a game more than Cardiff who are currently in second.  The Midlands side are eight points above the side in seventh and should only need a few more wins to confirm their end of season play-off position.

At Villa Park, they lost their last fixture but before that had gone ten unbeaten winning seven of these.  Both teams to score is a feature of these home encounters and has happened in each of their last three and five of their last six.

Around 55% of the league goals Aston Villa have scored this season have come in the second-half with 43% in the final 30 minutes.  Albert Adomah is their top scorer with 14 this season while Lewis Grabban has four since his January loan move was completed.

Aston Villa Team News

Neil Taylor (groin), Glenn Whelan (calf), Chris Samba, Andre Green (both hamstring), Gabby Agbonlahor and Jordan Lyden (both ankle) are doubts while Jed Steer (dislocated shoulder) is a long-term absentee.

Reading Preview

A much needed three points for the Royals at the weekend moved them up to 19th and put five points between them and Barnsley in 22nd. They now face a tricky run with two top four opponents and three top ten in their next trio of games.

Away from the Madejski Stadium, they have taken just one point from their last four and have won just one of their last nine.  Nine of their last 13 matches on the road have seen both teams find the back of the net.

Around 65% of the league goals that Reading have scored this campaign have come in the second-half with 47% in the final 30 minutes.  Their last four meetings with Villa have seen both teams find the back of the net.

Reading Team News

Yann Kermorgant will miss the game through suspension while Axel Andresson (ankle), Jon Dadhi Bodhvarsson, Omar Richards (both calf), Callum Harriott, Paul McShane (both hamstring), Tommy Elphick, Joe Mendez and Stephen Quinn (all knee) are doubts.  Jordan Obita (ligament) and Gareth McCleary (broken ankle) are out for the remainder of the season
