Aston Villa vs Preston North End Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Tuesday evening (19:45) fixture features two sides gunning for promotion from the Championship. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Aston Villa will be looking to bounce back from a 2-0 defeat to Fulham last time out in a fixture that saw their seven-game winning run come to an end. They can have few complaints about the result as the Cottagers were the better team. Preston continued their decent form as they made it six games unbeaten after drawing 1-1 at home to Wolves. They took a 52nd minute lead through Alan Browne only to have John Welsh dismissed seven minutes later but they held on to claim the point they would have took before the match never mind with ten men. The reverse fixture came at the start of November (1st) in Lancashire with Villa winning that one 2-0. James Chester and Robert Snodgrass were the goalscorers on that occasion.

Betting Tips and Predictions

This is one of those rare games when you could make valid arguments that both sides represent a bit of value. On the one hand, you have Aston Villa who have won six of their last eight at the own ground. On the other you have a Preston team with just one defeat in their last 15 in the league. I could not put you off backing either side but for me it is one to avoid a full-time result bet on. North-End have the second strongest road defence in the division and against a Villa side that could be without their two chief creative threats in Albert Adomah and Jack Grealish it makes sense to take Villa to score under 1.5 goals and a small stake play on a Lilywhites clean sheet.

Aston Villa Preview

Despite defeat last time out it is still 18 points from their last 21 for Villa a run that has put them in the mix for automatic promotion. They are now in third place two points behind Cardiff with the same amount of games played. At Villa Park, it is six victories and two draws from the last eight Championship fixtures with 13 netted and three conceded in their last four in front of their own fans. Only Wolves (33) at least once. Albert Adomah is their top league scorer with 13 goals this season and he has netted in two of the last three.

Aston Villa Team News

Jack Grealish (unknown), Albert Adomah, Chris Samba (both hamstring) and Jordan Lyden (ankle) are doubts while Jonathan Kodjia (also ankle) and Jed Steer (dislocated shoulder) are long-term absentees.

Preston North End Preview

The Lilywhites stretched their unbeaten run six in the league and with just one in their last 15 Championship fixtures. They sit in seventh place just outside the play-offs with a three-point gap between them and Bristol City in sixth. Away from Deepdale, they are eight games unbeaten with four of these ending in a victory and four finishing all-square. A feature of their road games is a strong defence with only Wolves (11) conceding a lower amount than the 16 they have conceded. Six of the last seven Preston North End league games have seen both teams find the back of the net. 66% of the goals they have scored in the Championship this season have come in the second-half.

Preston North End Team News

Ben Pearson and Gregory Cunningham are available after suspension but John Welsh will start his. Sean Maguire, Paul Gallagher (both hamstring) and Tom Clarke (knock) are doubts.
