Aston Villa vs Middlesbrough Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

This Tuesday evening (19:45) game features the two sides who were the ante-post favourites for the Championship title. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. Aston Villa drew their second successive game as they were held 0-0 at Villa Park by Brentford. The result was probably a fair reflection of the game though both sides did create scoring chances they were just unable to convert them. Middlesbrough ran out comfortable 3-0 victors at Bolton in their last league game. Britt Assombalonga netted a brace while Marvin Johnson came off the bench to score on his debut. You must go back to 2009 for the last time these sides met in the league so it is hard to read too much into previous meetings. A quirk of these battles is that the home side has not won any of the eight previous.

Betting Tips and Predictions

At the start of the season these two sides were expected to be close in ability but six games in and it becomes clear that they are not. Boro look the much stronger and can and should be backed at better than evens in the draw no bet market. Backing Adama Traore to score is statistically speaking not a strong bet but he was unplayable on Saturday and this streaky looking player should be full of confidence and looks worth an each-way first goalscorer play.

Aston Villa Preview

It is now three without defeat in the Championship for Aston Villa with two draws and one victory.  It has still not been the start that was anticipated as they have just six points from six games and sit in 18th place. At home, it is one victory and three draws and a record of just one league defeat from their last 11 in the league in front of their own fans.  Four of their last five at Villa Park have gone under 2.5 goals and nine of 11. Around 59% of their league goals this season have come in the final 30 minutes while at home the average time of the first goal conceded is the 61st minute. Conor Hourihane has netted four league goals this season and is the only Villa player to have grabbed more than one goal.

Aston Villa Team News

Jonathan Kodjia is back in training following a broken ankle though this game will come too soon for him. Andre Green (hamstring), Joshua Onomah (leg) and Keinan Davis (hip) are doubts. Jack Grealish (hip) and Rushian Hepburn-Murphy (thigh) are ruled out.

Middlesbrough Preview

It is four points from their last two in the Championship and ten for the season for the North-Eastern side.  They sit in sixth place going into the midweek round of fixtures and look set to be one of the promotion contenders. On the road, it has been a struggle for Boro but they will hope that the 3-0 victory over Bolton on Saturday represents a turning point.  Two of the three they have played away this season in the league have gone over 2.5 goals. Britt Assombalonga has four league goals for the season and is the only one of their players to have netted more than once.  Around 57% of their goals have come in the final 30 minutes.

Middlesbrough Team News

They have no registered injuries or suspensions.
