Aston Villa vs Middlesbrough Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Tuesday evening (19:45) fixture is a second-leg of the Championship promotion play-off semi-final.  Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Aston Villa come into the game on the back of a 1-0 victory at Middlesbrough in their first meeting.  Mile Jedinak got the only goal of the fixture a result which gives them a big advantage with home advantage still to come.

Middlesbrough though have already won at Villa Park this season beating them 2-0 in the League Cup. Patrick Bamford grabbed a brace on that occasion while their league meeting at Villa Park ended goalless in September.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Bookmakers have Aston Villa as favourites for this game and given their strong home form over the season and that Middlesbrough have struggled on the road then this looks about fair though it is not a price that looks value.

Both teams to score looks the sensible approach here as this happened in six of the last seven on the road for the Teesiders and four of the last seven at home for the Midlands outfit.

Five of the last seven at Villa Park have seen a goal netted in the last 20 minutes while this is also the case in three of the last four on their travels for Boro so back a late goal to be scored which is timed at 68:59.

YES in the both teams to score market

Aston Villa Preview

At Villa Park, they have won three of their last four and have lost just one of the previous 15 matches.  Over the course of the season they won 14 games, drew seven and lost on just two occasions.

In front of their own fans they netted 42 goals which was the second-best home attack in the division.   They also have a strong home defence with the 19 goals they have conceded the fifth best Championship record.

None of the last four at their own ground and just two of the last eight have gone over 2.5 goals with two of the last three going under 1.5 goals.  Lewis Grabban has netted in his last two at home and four of his last seven at this venue.

Aston Villa Team News

Neil Taylor (unknown), Andre Green (hamstring), Axel Tuanzebe, Gabby Agbonlahor, Jordan Lyden (all ankle) and Jed Steer (dislocated shoulder) are all doubts.

Middlesbrough Preview

Away from the Riverside Stadium, the Teesiders have won just eight of their 23 though they have also lost just eight times.  They must find something on their travels where they have won just two of their last nine.

On the road, they have not struggled to score with a third best divisional record of 34 goals bagged.  It is at the other end of the pitch where their main problem is having shipped 28 times.

Middlesbrough have netted at least once in each of their last seven when not at home and in each of their last two have netted twice.  Each of their last five and six of their last seven travelling ties have seen both teams net.

Middlesbrough Team News

Rudy Gestede (broken ankle) is out while Ahmed Elmohamady (unknown) is a doubt after limping out of the first-leg.
